ESPN's Karl Ravech speaks pretty highly of Russell Martin's defensive ability as a catcher--though it is a little weird that one of the two highlights they show in the video is Martin covering third base...
I had the perception that Martin was not that effective at throwing out baserunners at second; perhaps that was wrong? In any event, more rest during the season may give Martin a chance to be even more sharp in 2009. Didja hear that, Torre?

Is 25% good? Not sure about that. But I love the guy and wouldn't trade him for any catcher in the league. He deserved that gold glove.
25% is probably a little below average. Catcher stats look very inconsistent over the past several seasons. Ivan Rodriguez's career line is 38%, and he's a HOF'er. I think a lot of it depends on the pitcher. Martin had to catch Derrick Lowe for the last two years, so he's trying to dig balls out of the dirt and then make the throw down to 2nd. We'll see what his stats look like this season with Bills, Kershaw, and J-Mac.
Is it me or does Ravech look like a muppet on the still shot of the video before you play it.
Which muppet? Animal? Beaker? Gonzo?
It's never as simple as pure CS%. He's letdown by the fact that the Dodgers' staff is horrible at holding baserunners.
He's actually one of the better throwers in a context neutral environment.
