Way to Shit in Our Easter Basket, Dodgers

Bill Plaschke brings some terrible news today in his latest column. Buried almost as an afterthought is word that Nancy Bea Hefley has had her workload cut back and is now only in the Yard to play one song.
Missing will be the soothing sound of a ballpark organ, as 28-year veteran Nancy Bea Hefley's workload has been reduced to one song during the actual game. One. She waits for seven innings, plays "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," and goes home.
Assuming this was a Dodgers front office decision and not simply a choice made by Nancy Bea herself, this is, well, just some straight up bullshit. I can't imagine they didn't think there would be a backlash against relegating one of the stadium's most treasured assets.

Having attended last night's exhibition game versus the Angels, it is already evident that the stadium is continuing its tilt toward complete corporate dominance. Every inch is monetized, including by that sickening swill Montejo (owned by Budweiser, which is owned by InBev). I know players cost money but the front office has to realize what has brought fans to the Yard through thick and thin and keep sight of the idea of stadium as community, not just an ATM.

I hate this kind of shit. What happened to Dodger Tradition?

The stadium is looking like a Mexican soccer team jersey these days.

Hey Dusty, remember at Blogger Night when Kasten told us they hoped to consolidate advertising placement so little ads weren't plastered everywhere?

Yeah, about that...

Dusty Baker said...

Sure do. I still have the audio of him saying that, I'm pretty sure.

That was back when they used to invite us to Blogger Night. Or when they used to have one at all.

Does every last thing have to appeal to the lowest common denominator? So a bunch of 24 year olds were in a focus group and said, "oh yeah, I like Rihanna way more than Nancy D", so thumbs up? So--I dunno maybe day games could be organ games or something?

Organ. heh heh.

Organ games. Heh.

I was thinking same thing Johnny B. Some kids were like yeah we want more Drake and not that old lady. As if those are the core fans for the long haul.

I get that newer generation likes more "clap your hands" shit but doesn't mean they throw the baby out with the bathwater. The two approaches have co-existed for years now. Plus we get walkup music to help satisfy the younger folks.

Sounds like it's time for me to get liquored up and sit on the reserved level and lean over the railing and yell at the audiovisual guy and any random Dodger executives (and Plaschke also, for the hell of it).

"Where's Nancyyyyyyy??????"

When is it NOT tine to do that JB?

This better have been Nancy Bea's choice. Otherwise, fuck that.

/begins the first and only riot in recorded history prompted by a desire to hear organ music.

It's about the money and hipness now, not tradition. I personally think Guggenheim can't wait for the day when world renowned Dodger traditions are gone. Then with a clean field they can create what they want.
