'He Said' At-Game Recap: LSU Tigers vs. Kansas Jayhawks, 3/14

JAYHAWKS 8, TIGERS 4

Mrs. Orel and I recently spent some time in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After gorging ourselves on char-grilled oysters at Parrain's, we hit the LSU campus to catch a college baseball game.

The view of Tiger Stadium (football) as we approached the baseball fields.

The Tigers are also the defending College World Series champions.

Famous alumnus.

What hath they wrought?

The Tigers baseball team plays in Alex (pronounced "Alec") Box Stadium.

The student cheering section, unfortunately named "Coon's Corner."

No hat shuffle here. Instead, Zatarain's (pronounced "ZAT-uh-rans") Crawfish Shuffle. Crawdaddy #2 won, although I'm not sure what he was hiding. A cube of cheddar?

The view from the right-field bleachers.

Tigers RF Mikie Mahtook makes a nice diving catch in the top of the fourth.

Mahtook gets ready to throw a ball to a young fan.

Other highlights:

  • In the bottom of the sixth, Jayhawks 2B Robby Price made a sweet play, diving for a ball, ending up on his back and flipping it to the SS for a force out. The throw to first was late; otherwise, it would have been a spectacular DP.
  • They play but don't sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at the Box.
  • Bottom 7: KU RF Casey Lytle made a nice leaping catch against the outfield wall to end the inning.
  • Brett Bochy, son of Giants manager Bruce, got the save for the Jayhawks.
  • The game featured five (!) HBPs. None seemed intentional.

Hey nice recap, Orel. When did college baseball season start?

February. Guess they have to start early to be done by the end of the school year.

that's cool - they get more people than the Marlins do!

college baseball is underrated. if you ever get a chance to see any of the college world series in Omaha, definitely take it
