Hong-Chih Kuo (0-0) vs. Edinson Volquez (2-0).
COMMENTS: Orel says it's all about momentum, but I say it's simply about survival. The Dodgers are 0-3 vs. the NL East and 5-7 vs. the NL West, but we the one division we can beat is the NL Central (3-1). In our last game against the NL Central until May 9 (Astros), it would be nice to grab one more victory against the Reds today.
Kuo's tight pitch count and 33-pitch first inning gave him the early hook last Tuesday, disqualifying him for the victory (which was wrapped up with a bow for Esteban Loiaza and his five-inning relief appearance). He needs to be more efficient tonight against the Reds. Volquez sports a 1.17 ERA though he is also said to get deep into counts.
Which Dodgers offense will show up today?
UPDATE: Tonight's lineup: Gnomar stays in the three-hole, and Jones won't have much time to march toward Mendoza (details in the comments).

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 323 of 323Yes. I'm a devoted and passionate Aguilas del Zulia fan. I'm a ticket season holder, have a great seat, on the first row of infield boxes, just right next to Aguilas dugout. I've missed like 10 games in 3 seasons, only for very important reasons ( mostly work, dad's birthday, visa appointment at US Embassy in Caracas, stuff like that).
I get to hear heavy swearing when they are out at first. LOVE IT!. Love Manny Trillo, he's veeery nice to me, he even gave me a signed game worn cap, i felt like a kid on christmas day.
One anecdote to show how baseball devoted i am: i was listening to Aguilas-Tiburones game when i graduated for the first time. You could get to see the earphones wire on the pic, while university's dean was giving me my degree. While, we were getting dinner after that, i still was listening to the game, even though they were beating us very badly 15-4.
But true love knows no boundaries.
Wow, political discussion at SoSG. I feel like a Kennedy!
I don't remembere if I did, Orel
aww, it was a coup after 4 months, we had a general strike. Poor you! i'd wish you had been here at happiest times.
From you've said, you missed baseball season, i bet you would have absolutely loved it.
Holy crap we rolled over the comments section at 200 posts
That's awesome, Karina!
I can't help but ask....If the Dodgers were playing Aguilas del Zulia, who would you root for?
I refrain to badmouth Chavez, though it's tempting...
Erin, re: pitching. Remember what we were saying about the Dodgers flailing against young pitching? The numbers prove it.
Ha ha, we're rivaling Dodger Thoughts for number of comments.
Yes, I experienced much of the strikes too. In spite of it all I did love Venezuela and came out with some unforgettable memories. I remember the chants of "Se va, se va, se va" to the tune of the football Ole chant and the PDVSA propaganda everywhere and couldn't believe when I saw on TV Chavez back in power a few days after the coup. The rush of memories are coming back.
Okajima vs. Vlad in Anaheim.
I can't answer that: it's like asking which parent i love more or choosing between my brothers.
I guess i'd sit and root for both.
I'm pretty fond of the White Sox, but in any scenario they play against each other, i'd root for the Dodgers (and a on-field Ozzie Guillen argument)
Orel - find out when we have a true "World Series"
Smoltz got his 3,000 K tonight.
Well I guess that's what the Baseball Classic is
Pierre is right behind Smoltz
Hey Orel remember I got you those Venezeulan league baseball cards? If you can find them,s ee if any of them were Aguilas del Zulia
Good answer, Karina. How did you come to choose the Dodgers? Have you ever been to a Dodger game?
Vlad pops out. Erin exhales.
Now I have to start switching to the Spurs game, too. This is a busy evening for me.
"Pierre is right behind Smoltz." Ha!
the day Chavez got back, it was the saddest day of my life...what did you like the most about Venezuela?
Like I said, Erin, two TVs....
EK, I remember those! I wonder where I put them.
Favorite part of Venezuela? Definitely the golfeados
The Red Sox are wearing Earth Day patches.
Ha ha, seriously I have to try a golfeado one day. Anyways I loved the people, the food, good nightlife.
I truly believe Garrett Anderson is a robot.
Wow, the Hornets are killing the Mavs.
After yesterday's outburst, the Dodgers are now celebrating "Back to Earth" Day
I think Garret Anderson and Jeff Kent would get along.
Karina, do you want to hear a bit of Venezeulan trivia you might not know (and for anyone else who is interested)?:
I predicted (in my brain, and nowhere else) that the Mavs would be swept. Could be that I'm a genius, or could be that I just really hate the Mavs.
I felt in love with baseball at the 1988 World Series. I couldn't help to fall in love with the dodger blue. I still remember the late Delio Amado Leon calling those games (he was a sort of Vin Scully).
On the winter of that year, Aguilas won the venezuelan championship and they moved to win the Series del Caribe (caribbean baseball world series). A baseball monster was born (my older brother being my mentor)
I haven't been at a Dodgers game but i'm planning to drop a visit at Glendale next spring training *crossing my fingers*
I've been at the States several times, but i haven't gotten out of Florida.
Okajima vs. Torii in ANA.
I'm all ears, Steve.
Hunter K's! Erin pumps her fist, or makes a similar gesture of victory!
Big-time pitching from Okajima to keep the lead at 6-5, Sox.
I update you guys because I know you care.
See why i hate Chavez: he is on a national tv chain, therefore interrupting my white sox- yankees game, while the announcers talking about Aguilas new manager.
Orel keeps beating me to the updates anyway, so it's cool.
I believe I yelled, Orel. No fist pumps, as my hands are otherwise occupied on the keyboard.
The piece of trivia is also my only claim to fame: I was the very first guest at the JW Marriott in Caracas!
1988 was a great year indeed.
Erin, don't tell me you're a Celtics fan too.
Erin, if PA goes 53-46 then I don't think that's much of a "win" for HRC. She and Bill will run around screaming about it, of course, but she won't make much of a dent in the Obama delegate lead.
And, her campaign is already in the red.
Somewhere, Howard Dean screams.
And not only that, I was the only guest in the entire hotel the night they opened.
Really, EK? Did they give you something to commemorate the occasion?
Orel, you keep describing Erin's reactions. Are you and Erin in the same room, or at least on webcams?
No, not a Celtics fans. Four years ago, the girlfriend, who hated baseball, adopted the Red Sox for me (and is now maybe a bigger fan than I am), and so I adopted her San Antonio Spurs for her (and now I might be a bigger fan than she is). We became Dodger fans together.
Almost 250 comments in a game we have no chance of winning.
you didn't mention the girls! first time ever i don't hear an american guy saying " there are lots of beautiful venezuelan women"
I don't feel like fixing my errors in that last post, so just ignore them.
AWESOMEEEEE! see how special you are! how many people can say that?
EK, you weren't staying in room 1408, were you?
Erin, that's how bad the Dodger game is. I'm racing you to update everybody on the Red Sox game.
Orel - no commemorative gift but I returned almost 3 years later and the staff remembered me
but that's probably because I'm so good looking
And this is how bad the Dodger game is: Andruw Jones is pinch-hitting for Loaiza.
it's not like we reached dodger thoughts amount of comments, we are only four people!
Jones comes in to PH! Can he march toward Mendoza?
Sax - not 1408...my experience was more like this
And Jones whiffs. Better update the graph.
Please excuse me while I play with my dog.
Orel and his euphamisms
excuse me...euphemisms
could you sleep alone in a empty hotel? my man kubrick's the shining didn't do anything to your subconscious?
EK, did you at least recognize the concierge?
EK, gezundheit
a Furcal single! that's the most exciting i've been in 3 innings...
excuse me...gesundheit
Orel, where the hell are you? You going to the other side again?
Yay, Gnomar didn't GIDP again!
Don't bother Orel. He's, ahem, "playing with his dog"
speaking of commemorations, is it the largest game thread at SoSG? do you plan to write an entry for it, if the case?
I'm back! And yes, I have a dog.
Sax, re: webcams. No, but that gives me an idea....
Erin, how sweet! Good thing she wasn't, say, a Yankees fan.
EK, but he's been gone for longer than two minutes
It was kind of creepy staying there by myself with a ghost staff. I think I sort of pressured them into opening earlier than they wanted to because I didn't like my previous hotel. And actually I remember there was a Dodger game on espn but they couldn't locate a remote control for the TV so I was annoyed.
Sax, don't blame me if you can't break on through.
Karina, this is indeed a SoSG record. We should celebrate it by...beating it tomorrow!
Orel, I would not date even the hottest Yankees fan. Ever.
Yankees...27 world championships, 8 championships at Dodgers expense...
who's in the mood to send some candy to Yankees?
I'd bet my life that Bobby Abreu wouldn't resist dulce de leche, susy, cocossette and savoy chocolate.
Can't spell Kent without a K. Or three, tonight.
Please, gentlemen, not in front of mixed company.
And by "mixed company" I mean Red Sox fans.
Eric, did you try venezuelan chocolate?
Okay kids, going to the crackberry. Lates.
And Kotchman ties it up in ANA!
I hope the long days of rest don't affect Saito's arm...
Thanks, Orel. I was watching the Spurs game, and I missed that. Crap.
Karina, assuming that is not a euphemism for something else as well, yes, I think I did try Venezuelan chocolate.
Erin, not even Hillary Clinton?
Just kidding! Don't justify that with an answer!
At this rate, Saito could bench press a moose.
No, that is not a euphemism.
Aybar doubles in BOS. Why the hell am I thinking this game was in Anaheim?
I guess it's rare the Dodgers and Angels are on the road simultaneously.
Yeah, that's it.
Not sure I completely understand the lingo in Sax' last post but I gather he is gone. I need to head out soon too unfortuantely.
so, did you like venezuelan chocolate or this euphemism thing could be used against you at a law court?
EK, want to go grab a beer?
Erin, when did the Red Sox start using Okajima for multiple-inning relief?
And no, that's—never mind.
Karina, there was a brand of chocolate bar I really liked but now I can't remember the name.
Sure Sax
Is this post #300???
It's too bad you'll miss the Dodgers' 8-run comeback.
Yes!
Corey Patterson tripled, reached Mendoza's line. Andruw Jones is dark green envious.
Savoy? can you remember the colors of the package?
You were probably referring to the fine chocolate though. I was referring to a standard chocolate candy bar you get for like 1000 bolivares
Just in time for Earth Day!
not Savoy...0k my friends, I must bid you all farewell...
So it was Rikity (orange and yellow), Cri-Cri (brown and yellow) and Chocolate con Leche (blue and yellow)
we changed currency. Now it's bolivares fuertes...
yes I noticed they cut off like three zeroes now
Orel, I can't say that they've done it a lot with Okajima. I was surprised at his use tonight, particularly since he was brought in to face a righty in Guerrero. With Timlin back and seemingly healthy, I guess they're going to a sort of platoon for middle innings, instead of the way they've been doing it, which is generally to use Okie for the eighth.
Anyhow Karina, Erin, Orel, Sax, it has been chévere. I look forward to reading about the 9th inning comeback tomorrow morning, at which time I will remember the name of the Venezuelan chocolate. Good night!
Well, that's the game, with Pierre up to bat. I guess I'll be seeing you all tomorrow.
Adios, EK!
Adios, Erin!
...and Pierre pops up (!!!) to end the game. Karina, it's been a pleasure.
Pierre pops to end it. Hello, 1-4 roadtrip.
Red Sox break the tie! Erin's night is only half ruined.
Sax, I thought you were Crackberrying.
Well, that gnome came up a little short tonight.
Bye people, good night! let's see if tomorrow Dodgers can score 9-11 runs...it's been a great pleasure, indeed!
Rory Markas sounds like Gil from the Simpsons!
Three and a half months later...
Erin, she didn't win the Democratic nomination.
No need to hide!
