Let's All Get Our Hopes Up!

From AP notes at ESPN.com:

SCHMIDT IMPRESSIVE IN BULLPEN OUTING WITH DODGERS (3:25 p.m. ET)

Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt, a question mark entering spring training, looked impressive in his first bullpen outing Saturday and was all smiles afterward.

"Knock on wood, I hate to even say anything. I was pain-free," he said. "I'm feeling free and easy. Stamina up, arm strength, too. [But] we're not out of the woods."

Schmidt used all of his pitches during the session, split into two segments of 15 pitches each not counting a few warmup tosses.

I'm kind of peeved that he told us how good he felt last year. Plus he's been a power pitcher and the type of surgery he had doesn't lend itself to regaining power. If he heals he'll have to adjust his pitching style, which I think will be possible though not easy. I don't see him regaining anything higher than a league avg 3 guy, and we signed him to be an ace.

Given the severity of his injury, I'd be pretty pleased if Schmidt could be a solid #3 starter for the next two years.

Plus, these players will never tell the truth as long as multi-million dollar contracts are at risk.
