Vin Scully, on the Perils of Dismissing Vin Scully

Vin Scully, from yesterday's telecast after Adrian Gonzalez hit his second home run of the game:
I'll always remember a long, long time ago, in the middle sixties, early seventies at best. Dodgers had an infielder from Minnesota named Zoilo Versalles. And I liked Zoilo, he was a very nice guy, he was from Cuba, and I admired the fact that he would take almost every penny he earned, send it back to his relatives in Cuba. So he was barely surviving in the country.

Well, knowing all that, and knowing he was a nice guy, you rooted for him. And he was struggling, he was hitting .190. And I really felt badly for him.

Hairston goes down, and the batter now will be Schumaker.

Anyway, on an aeroplane one day, I had Ted Williams' theory on hitting. All about looking for the sweet spot, et cetera, that we just talked about. So I walked to the back of the plane, I said, "Here, Zoilo, read this. You know, maybe it'll help." I flipped it to him.

Oh, an hour into the flight, Zoilo came down the aisle, flipped Ted Williams' hitting stuff to me. I said, "What'd you think?"

He said, "Baloney."

He didn't say "baloney." But I'm saying "baloney."

I couldn't believe it. And he hit .190.

One ball and one strike....

When Vin Scully asks if you want to become a god, you say YES!
