PCS 5.1: Juuuuust A Bit Outside!

Puzzle Rules: The solution to the puzzle is a former Dodger who is well-known for a particular event. Comment freely in the thread, but if you have the solution, please don't give it away to everyone in the comments section. Instead, do the following:
  • Send us an Email with "PCS" somewhere in the subject line, containing the first and last name of the players, along with your reasoning. Submitted answers without the reasoning, or those submitted with the incorrect reasoning, will count for participation only, even if the answer itself is correct. And please include your screen name somewhere in the email; and
  • Post a comment simply saying you have emailed your solution attempt. We may not be able to reply to your original email promptly, so please be patient and check back on the comment thread for the latest news; we may confirm correct answers there.
You have until midnight PT tonight to submit your answer. Answer will be posted tomorrow morning. Good luck!

Hint #1: The title contains a clue to the "modified state" referenced in the original text.

Hint #2: You need to put something back that was taken out.

Hint #3: Seeimageabove.Whatiswrongwiththesesentences?

Hint #4: A digital calculator will not help you with this puzzle, but maybe you'd have better luck solving it on an abacus.

Good luck, puzzlers!

Remember to put "PCS" in the subject line of your answer e-mail.

As a bit of guidance for when you've decoded the grid, the former Dodger we're looking for isn't the only player to be associated with this event, but he is the one originally and best associated with it.

Was hoping for a quick "read the first letter of each poem line" this morning for the first puzzle of the year so I could go back to bed. It seems Stubbs is already in midseason form. This one has me stymied so far.

"Jodles" sounds like it could be a dirty word.

I'll be in and out of meetiings today, but I'll have time in between to post hints and check answers.

Any ETA on that first hint?

Fuck!

Wait! if you read the rows straight through, i'm getting some words...

Solution is in the fifth row, fourth column, reading downward --> FROG!

Sorry to give away the answer in the comments.

I will award 10 points for EK's incorrect but amusing response of Vicente Padilla.

Hint #1 posted.

Hint #2 posted. Didn't think this one would be a stumper. Shows what I know...

Steve Sax said...

@Stubbs: if you could have hidden "sweaty frog", we'd know Padilla for sure

Eric Karros said...

@Stubbs - I hear you...I think the tricky part was that 'FROG' read vertically downward rather than the standard left to right, so some people probably missed it. Clever!

Looking forward to puzzle #2!

Seriously though, I'm totally clueless.

Pretty stumped with the puzzle, too.

Had an idea here, but it didn't lead anywhere. Tough one to start the year off on.

Big-ass hint #3 up.

Stubbs made the ultimate mistake in overestimating our intelligence.

Should have gone with my "How many fingers am I holding up? idea.

I feel like Lisa in that episode of The Simpsons about the "Simpson Gene". She's the only one that can't solve the puzzle, EVEN Ralph figured it out...

So...I got here a little late. Quick question. Was the red line always there or is it part of a hint? Not that it matters - I have no idea what to do once I find out the answer!

The red line showed up at hint #3

Either I'm out of practice, or I haven't hit my head against the wall enough yet.

I'm on the road, so I won't be able to update the main post for a bit, but here's Hint #4 for those that are still working:

A digital calculator will not help you with this puzzle, but maybe you'd have better luck solving it on an abacus.

Steve Sax said...

Stubbs, I posted your fourth hint

Steve K said...

This is one where I'm going to kick myself when I see the solution.

I found the word, "Gin"!
