It's a Whole New Ryu tonight, as we get to see if the $61.7M man ($25.7M in posting fees; six years / $36M for the actual contract) will perform to his high expectations now that he's clad in Dodger blue. This ain't the Hanwha Eagles (or "Hanwha Chickens", either), that's for sure. I suppose Ryu might get confused seeing the Hanwha Eagles-like orange and black colors on today's opponent. (As long as it doesn't keep Ryu from throwing inside today, especially following the Giants' two-HBP performance on Opening Day). Ryu went 2-2 with a 3.29 ERA (27 Ks and 8 BB over 27.1 IP) this spring, which is reassuring. But now, the real games begin.
Ashley Madison Bumgarner is coming off a 16-win season with a 3.37 ERA (103 ERA+, slightly better than the average pitcher), his highest in any of his three seasons. Bumgarner's spring training line 2-0, 2.29 ERA (18 Ks and 7 BB over 19.2 IP) looks eerily similar, so we may be in for a head-to-head matchup akin to the Kershaw-Cain duel from yesterday. The hype surrounding this game is high; even the Chosun Ilbo is all over Ryu's start. I'm hoping the Ilbo is indeed the Chosun one today.
And that Ryu is the Hyun-Jin that powers the Dodgers to victory.
If Ryu is no shuriken violet on the mound tonight, we should get the win.
