I am rereading Steve Howe's book Between the Lines. I had forgotten that he tells the story of the horrible car accident he was in with his then fiance and her parents. He said a drunk driver 's car was going about 100 mph and the tire hit the dirt and he lost control and hit them head on. It was very eerie because the way I remember him dying was hitting the dirt on the soft shoulder out in the desert on Hwy 10 and rolling his truck. I don't know if there were any drugs in his system. I remember the newscast saying he fell asleep.
