Reading between the lines of today's LA Times Dodgers Report, I found this quote from Grady Little (three paragraphs down):
"Whatever's best for the team to help us win, that's really what it's about," Garciaparra said. "Everyone out there with this uniform on feels the exact same way I do, and that's what I love about this team."
Little said he had been contemplating the move for about a week, explaining that it could help the Dodgers "get in a position where we can be the best we can be."Nomar Garciaparra is moving across the infield at the request of Manager Grady Little to accommodate hot-hitting first baseman James Loney and to displace disappointing third basemen Wilson Betemit and Tony Abreu. Garciaparra took ground balls at third base for the first time Monday afternoon and could play there as soon as Friday, when the Dodgers open a three-game series against San Diego.
Contemplating this move for a WEEK? When Sons of Steve Garvey's Free James Loney campaign has been going strong since March 31? Come on, Grady, get your finger on (someone else's) pulse. This move was well overdue, and we're looking forward to the change (as well as appreciative that Garciaparra was cool enough not only to make the move, but also to say all the right things to the press about the move).
If word gets out about Grady's slow-firing synapses, he may be taken off those Jiffy Lube commercials (since Jiffy Lube wouldn't want to be known as just "Lube").

Two questions:
What is it that Grady needed to wait for? In this case, a road series loss to one of the (predictably) worst teams in the AL probably had something to do with it.
Whose decision was it really? If, as others have suggested at the time, the Dodgers have a penchant for acquiring ex-Red Sox greats (c.f. Derek Lowe) when they become free agents for whom age has dimmed their stars, the wonder is that it has been done this early. Maybe it's just me reading too much into the tea leaves, but I see Frank McCourt's handwriting all over this one.
Rob, good questions. As for the first, there have been enough examples of poor 3B performances this season, that one would think Grady would have thought of this option months ago.
As for the second, I think the only recent idea McCourt has had about Garciaparra, was whether to charge $15 for parking on top of the $50 admission fee for Nomar's Carne Asada Sunday.
