Game 1 Thread: April 5 @ Padres, 4p

Clayton Kershaw (0-0, -.--) vs, Edinson Volquez (0-0, -.--)

Thank the baseball gods! After anti-climactic, off-time-zoned Japanese baseball games with MLB teams, followed by weird art-deco "stadiums" going through their own antiseptic, abhorrently-colored motions--the Dodgers finally get to do a REAL opening day, today at Petco Park.

Finally, real baseball. I can't wait!

Kershaw was 3-0 against the Padres last year, and is obviously going to be a critical part of any run the Dodgers make this year. Volquez was acquired by the Padres from the Reds in December; he was 2-0 with a 3.48 ERA in 20.2 innings this spring (but was 5-7 with a 5.71 ERA in 20 starts last year for Cincinnati). Let's start this season off on the right foot!

Go Dodgers!

@DB

The badges were just in my case earlier. The Daily Badges list is still empty.

Strangely, my case have been refilled with my badges from last season. Nothing says well governed IT like performing application maintenance on what has to be one of the highest traffic days of the season.

Jason said...

Anyone else see the t-shirts Uribe was handing out?

I assume the graphic is meant to impart Uribe's warning to "get your own damn snack!"

Hideo Nomo said...

The picture on the front is his actual swing.

Dusty Baker said...

Looking at that lineup ( the real one not the one w Karina leading off ), which I've really been putting off doing...my god we are going to miss Wide Eyes. Hell, we may even miss Aaron Miles.

(remains positive despite better senses)

Dusty Baker said...

Nats go up 2-1 in top 9th. F the Cubs!

Jason said...

But Dusty, if you take the last initial of each player in reverse batting order it spells:

KEULREKEG

Which, if you pronounce it out loud, sounds an awful lot like Cooler Keg.

Mattingly obviously had us in mind when filling out his lineup card.

Dusty Baker said...

@Nomo, Jason

Yeah if you look at that t-shirt graphic just right, it lookalike Urine standing way away from the plate and just holding the Bator straight across the strike zone, hoping the balls somehow hits the bat squarely. Only thing missing is Urine closing his eyes for the full effect.

Dusty Baker said...

Sounds like a sleek, new German-engineered mini keg apparatus.

Hideo Nomo said...

Anything I can do, you can do better,
You can do anything better than me.

Hideo Nomo said...

Or than I.

Fuck it.

MR.F said...

You were right the first time, Hideo!

Orel said...

I'll take it! "It" being...whatever. Not feeling picking today.

Orel said...

^ picky

This series is the only time all season that the Dodgers will be playing in SD on a weekend. All the other series are midweek.

It's time for Dodger baseball!
God how I missed Vin

BTW...you'll earn my badge if I drink 2 beers and drop my pants.

Orel said...

The so-called "Wally Moon badge."

MeanieBreanie said...

It's about friggin time. Let's play ball!!

@Orel - here is some trivia for you. There really was a Wally Moon. He owned the San Antonio Dodgers farm team back in the day. Sax, Scioscia and others can tell you the guy was the biggest tightwad ever. Their clubhouse parties epic in CHEAP!

MeanieBreanie said...

Mea Culpa...The Wally Moon we are both referring to is one and the same. I didn't realize he once played for the Dodgers back when we were just a twinkle in our parents eyes. Doesn't excuse the fact that he is a tightwad.

Dusty Baker said...

He may have been a tightwad but he inspired the phrase "Moonshot" according to legend.

Alex said...

Donning a new fitted as I do every Opening Day - LET'S DO THIS!

Dusty Baker said...

I like that plan and attitude, Alex!

Paul said...

Look at me, in my natural position for today's game. Wait I think my natural position these days is on the couch with a beer in hand.

Paul said...

I can't wait till the dodgers win the title and get to open on the road the next year in a one game series.

That youtube video makes me so happy.

Paul said...

Dodgers haven't played one inning and I am already tired of the bunts are awful, wins mean nothing bitchfest.

Aww well a Dee Gordon lead off triple will clean my palate.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Fuck bunts and wins!

Fred's Brim said...

WOOPWOOP!

Orel said...

How many comments before first pitch?

Paul said...

How about winning bunts?

Dusty Baker said...

How about cunning runts?

Dusty Baker said...

In my office overlooking Wilshire, Vinny!

Fred's Brim said...

MLASC putting me at third base has inspired me: Uribe is my guy this year. I am ready to cheer for him and really hope he bounces back

Paul said...

Who gets the Dodgers first homerun? Whoever guesses right gets a five start dinner paid for by Neeebs.

Dusty Baker said...

I'm sure he will bounce, FB.

Fred's Brim said...

I think these ESPN cameramen are still shooting basketball games. They can handle any action more than 15 feet off the ground

Dusty Baker said...

If Urine gets the first HR, I'll streak.

Paul said...

Uribe is gonna bounce all over the place.

Dusty Baker said...

45

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I have faith in you, FB. You're my guy.

Fred's Brim said...

Thanks, MARLA!

Paul said...

My money is on Rivera. If either Ellis hits a homerun today I'll buy Dusty a bottle of scotch to streak naked with.

Paul said...

Wish I was at a bar right now...

Dusty Baker said...

Alcohol Rehab Los Angeles is the current ad being generated between the first and second posts today.nhow appropriate!

Alex said...

50

Either for the 1st HR...

Dusty Baker said...

HaH! Look at Paul's post right before I posted on rehab.

Paul said...

LA has a place to rehab your alcohol?! Nice.

Fred's Brim said...

I DO NOT have a problem!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ajellis with the first homer. I'm thinking outside the box.

Dusty Baker said...

@Alex

You mean Ethier?

We should have an all auto-correct team (e.g., Urine, Either).

Nomo, this sounds like a job for you.

Dusty Baker said...

@Marla

I'm think he won't actually hit it OUT of the box.

Orel said...

Great, classic anthem. Guess you're going to get that in a military town.

Orel said...

Flyover!

Paul said...

The sons should do a game thread study to see the the average number of posts before alcohol is mentioned. Of course Mr
C would be an outlier and his data would be excluded.

Alex said...

@DB
oops! exactly! i love all the snarky Uribe...i mean Urine comments!

Paul said...

I almost want to by the MLB whatchamacallit for my iPad just for the next 30 mins.

Alex said...

its only fitting that the beach boys will be doin the anthem at the home opener...lets hope Brian Wilson doesn't have an LSD flashback and freakout :-P

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

63 comments before first pitch? What's going on round here?

Alex said...

Good afternoon Mr. Scully!

Fred's Brim said...

VIN!

Fred's Brim said...

oof Clayton with the flu?

Dusty Baker said...

Son of a c- word! My iPad data plan maxed out at 4:03 PDT before 4:05 first pitch of the first Dodger game of the season. I feel like I'm in some celestial psychological experiment, like i did when i participated in one of EK's contests.

Orel said...

ON MY ASS VIN

Cliff Beefpile said...

Go Dodgers!

Orel said...

Vin looks good! Glad he's pulled back on the dye color.

Orel said...

72! One for each win this season.

Dusty Baker said...

Let's hope I don't have an LSD flashback on Opening Day. #DeadShow

Jason said...

In the cubicle, Vin!

Orel said...

Steal first, Dee!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

First pitch is a strike.

Orel said...

Orel said...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

That was not the start I was hoping for.

Fred's Brim said...

Boos for Matty! Yes!

MR.F said...

Kemp makes an out =(

Dusty Baker said...

I have the flu, too. If I can sit here in my air-cooled office and type snark all afternoon in the Game Thread, then surely Clay can pitch 7-8 quality innings with the flu.

Fred's Brim said...

That's OK, Matty

Orel said...

3 up, 3 down. Kid K looks queasy.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

1-2-3 inning for Volquez.

Fred's Brim said...

Clayton looks like death warmed over

Dusty Baker said...

Of course GameDay is lagging; just as I was getting psyched for his first AB, I noted above that he'd made an out.

Jason said...

Kershaw's facial expression coming out of the dugout is "I'm going to hurl any minute now."

That is probably not good.

Orel said...

And not the good kind of hurling.

Fred's Brim said...

haha Vin didn't want to talk about the Padres lineup. And I didn't want to hear about it! Know your customer!

Fred's Brim said...

wow - great play by Dee-Nice!

Orel said...

Bang-bang, Gordon to Loney to get Maybin for our first defensive out of the year!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Maybin grounds out, 6-3.

Fred's Brim said...

I sure hope Clayton doesn't have to cover first at any point. He may not make it there

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

anybody backing up K in the pen?

Cliff Beefpile said...

1-2-3, baby!

Orel said...

3U3D! FY!

Jason said...

The Padres lineup has the collective facial expression of "I'm going to hurl any at-bad now."

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I get the live look-in just when the inning ends. Dammit.

Fred's Brim said...

good inning

Paul said...

The live look in is always overrated.

Orel said...

"Jim Rivera"! Vin's first typo of the year!

Paul said...

Let's go Jimbo!

Jason said...

Harang has a horrendous chin strap beard.

Orel said...

Vin story! Putting transcription cap on now....

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I wonder how much of a difference Scout will make to Gameday.

Fernie V said...

I am a little behind but sitting at home listening to vin, yeah baby.

Jason said...

Someone did remember to inform the Dodger hitters that spring training is over, right?

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Huh.

Fred's Brim said...

Is Clayton lined up for the home opener too?

Fernie V said...

Ah, wish I was in San Diego, watching live.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

"SCOUT: Clayton Kershaw battled back from 3-0 to retire Jesus Guzman."

...Thanks.

Fernie V said...

In person like last year.

Fred's Brim said...

wow - nice work, AJ and James!

Fred's Brim said...

And Clayton!

Jason said...

Loney makes up for striking out by snagging the bad through from Ajellis to complete Kershaw's K to end the inning.

Alex said...

Nice play on the passed ball!

Dusty Baker said...

I wish I was in Tijuana eating barbecue iguana.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Juan Uribe strikes out swinging.

Didn't see that one coming.

Jason said...

UrineK

Alex said...

Uribe looks like the well zombie from last season of The Walking Dead, especially in his on the screen graphic pic...

Alex said...

oops my bad - Urine lol

Fernie V said...

Was that three pitch k

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Ajellis goes down swinging. I guess Volquez brought his stuff today.

Fred's Brim said...

take it easy, Clayton

Orel said...

Kid K with a double? Single with error?

Jason said...

Kershaw leads the Dodgers in BA, OBP, SLG, total bases and just plain awesomeness.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Clayton Kershaw is the first Dodger batter to get on base in 2012. I totally saw that coming.

Fred's Brim said...

softball pinch runner for Clayton?

Alex said...

thanks for the graphic description vin! upchucking and diarrhea...

Cliff Beefpile said...

Hahahaha! Thanks for letting us all in on Clayton's diarrhea, Vinny.

Dusty Baker said...

Wouldn't we know it that Kid gets a double on a day when he is so sick?!?

Fred's Brim said...

I hope Clayton has a cork

Dusty Baker said...

Running to first and my pants about to burst, diarrhea
Running to second and I need a disinfectant, diarrhea

Jason said...

My fantasy team is currently 1 for 18 today. Or worse than the two pitchers in this game.

Fred's Brim said...

that's dum

Orel said...

Volquez with a cheapie that Kemp can't catch diving.

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Uh oh.

Jason said...

Ajellis didn't even try to block that pitch.

Fred's Brim said...

hmm Ellis was fooled on that one

Orel said...

CKWP. Men on 2nd & 3rd, 2 out.

Orel said...

RA for the bad guys.

Orel said...

There's a nice save by Ajellis.

Orel said...

Strike three call! Kershaw escapes!

Alex said...

There you go kid! Way to keep your composure!!!

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Whew!

Fred's Brim said...

nice work, Clayton. Now take a rest, take a shit, barf a little maybe. Hopefully the bats can give you a couple of extra minutes to wipe

Fred's Brim said...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

Dusty Baker said...

Mr. LA Sports Czar said...

I've never called him Kid.
