Ellis In; Kuroda Needs Convincing

The Dodgers may have been given the Heisman by Ryan Doumit (is Mr. Misty Mays next?), but Ned Colletti has signed second baseman Mark Ellis to a two-year, $8.75 million contract that includes a team option for 2014. "Ellis, 34, hit .248/.288/.346 in 519 plate appearances for the Athletics and Rockies this year," MLBTR tells us.

Meanwhile, Ken Gurnick at Dodgers.com brings us this interesting Hiroki Kuroda tidbit:

Kuroda told the club that he will re-sign only if he feels the team has a chance to win the World Series. Otherwise he will consider other Major League clubs.

What changed between the trading deadline and now, I wonder?

Maybe Hiro's the one guy who genuinely likes Frank.

"Ellis, 34..." is as far as I got before (crying).

Ellis; because who needs a lollygagger like Jamey Carroll or Aaron Miles?

Where's Marla to correct the spelling of Misty May's last name? It's "May," not "Mays." Unless it was some oblique reference to Willie.

What the fuck Ned, why pay the journey man millions. I hate the way this dude operates, exactly like his mentor.

Two Things:

I think Kuroda actually said, "The sushi in Los Angeles is not bad, but Juan Uribe always takes more than his share in the clubhouse."

Somehow the translation was garbled.

Second: 34 year old journeyman second baseman with crappy stats at 4.0+ mil per year. WTF are you thinking Ned. How are you going to afford a run at Fielder by throwing money at light hitting middle infielders.

Speaking of light hitting, this is from LA Times' Steve Dilbeck:

"The Dodgers are closing in on a deal with light-hitting catcher Matt Treanor, according to baseball sources. Treanor would back up A.J. Ellis."

Presumed and accepted light hitting. Gotta love it.

So, about 8 million committed to the following "upgrades."

Juan Rivera, average defense in left field with some pop and can play 1st over Jerry Sands, average defense in left field with some pop and can play 1st.

Mark Ellis, solid defense at 2nd but can't hit a lick (anymore) over Justin Sellers, solid(ish) defense at 2nd (though better at short) but (probably) can't hit a lick.

Matt Treanor, solid defense but can't hit a lick and is old over Tim Federowicz, (possibly) solid defense but can't hit a lick and is young.

Fedwhatever still needs time in the minors. Asking for him and Ellis to shoulder all of the catching would just be too much to ask for two guys who have not had consistent time in the big leagues.

It strikes me that we, loyal readers of SoSG, could do half-assed, Scotch-driven research and collectively decide on better players buys than has been practice in the Colletti regime.

Can someone remind me again why we got Tim Federowicz? I thought that was meant to be forward looking but now he doesn't seem to be in the frame.

If Dodgers sign Treanor, I'm banking on this space being filled with pictures of his wife....

Ned is counting on Ethier, Loney and Uribe to bounce back. What's Uribe gonna bounce back to, slightly below average as oppossed to big pile of shit?

Orel said...

Are we so predictable, Steve?

Yes we are.

I think Ned meant he literally expects Uribe to bounce back to camp via his own blubber so as to avoid expensive air travel.
