"I Don't Want To Start Any Blasphemous Rumors..."

One of the benefits of having L'il Lasorda is that we get to go places like Disneyland (which I hadn't visited since an alcohol-fueled Grad Nite back in the late '80s). In any event, last week the Lasordas packed up the Family Truckster and headed down the 5 to Carlsbad, where we had a day of fun exploring the wonders of Legoland. Lego Batman. Lego Giraffes. Lego Vader. You get the drift. While waiting in line for the Royal Joust, I overheard a couple of other fathers talking. They apparently had graduated from the same high school just a couple years apart (small world, this Legoland). One of the fathers had been drafted out of high school by the Astros and was now one of the Northern California area scouts for the Dodgers. He mentioned that they had just wrapped up some organizational meetings (presumably in preparation for the Winter Meetings) and here are a couple of highlights:
  • Manny: He thinks the Dodgers will find a way to get him signed. Torre "loves" him and wants him.
  • Pitching: The scout said that the Dodgers were looking to sign Andy Pettitte. Again, Torre "loves" the guy from their time together on the Yankees. Presumably, he'd take Lowe's slot in the rotation.

While these rumors have been circulating in the blogosphere over the past few days, I thought it was interesting to hear it substantiated by an actual Dodger insider. At least it made waiting in line marginally more tolerable.

I'm not so sure that Pettitte is a better option than Randy Johnson simply because Andy will likely require more money. I'm willing to go 30 million over 3 years for Andy. Johnson would only cost one year in all likelyhood. Both seem like good replacements for Lowe. Innings eaters at a decent price and league average+ performance.

Signing Manny has been a must! 100 million over 4 years is reasonable with no options afterward.

Solidify the rotation and the lineup, add a few scrap heap relievers and starters and a middle infielder in AAA incase things really get out of hand (Hu loses sight in both eyes) and were set. It should be fairly easy to win the West when all the other clubs are still rebuilding.

Personally, I'd rather keep Lowe than either Andy or Randy, but that's just me.

However $100MM for 4 years of Manny's Age 37-40 service? No thanks. We'll have to see how creative Trader Neddie can get.

Why keep Lowe when 1) he doesn't want to be here, and 2) he's going to cost 15 million a year over 3 or 4 years? Why not just go all in for Sabathia? 7 x 140 million.

I've expressed before that I think Ned will go out and try to get Ray Durham. I thought it was a typical "Ned's guys" move. The idea seems better and better to me every time I re-visit it. Which makes me think he wont do it. I think I'd rather go with Hu at second and DeJesus at SS anyway.

Sign Manny, Sabathia, Javvy Vaentin, and maybe some more junk to fill a few (Cheap!) holes.

We'll see how he screws this up.
