Our own Joc Pederson goes up against Manny Machado in the first round of the Home Run Derby tonight (5p PT), and the only ESPN pundit to predict Pederson will win the contest is Doug Padilla.
I don't know if I can keep up with all the changes in the new HR Derby format, but maybe being a rookie will allow Pederson to not be weighed down by the format rigidities of the past.
Or maybe, he'll just get hot at the right time.

I am just hoping Joc doesn't strike out too many times
Alanna was joking last week that Joc would be the first player to either walk or strikeout in the HR Derby
I'm just hoping Joc gets at least 6 HR
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/hr_derby.jsp
According to this page, the most HRs by a Dodger in the derby is 2 by Mondesi in 1995 and Kemp 2011. Hee-Seop Choi hit 5 in 2005, but that was the year everyone was playing for their country, not their MLB team. He didn't make it past round 1 either.
So I'm with Orel. Hit at least 6 Joc!
Derby might get rained out. They've changed the time limits to try and squeeze what they can in if it clears up for a bit.
Stupid Cincinnati weather, it's almost as bad as that abomination they call chili.
Just read the format for the derby. Sounds terrible. I'm guessing a few guys won't even get 10 "outs" in 4 minutes.
I've never had Skyline Chili
CHENTE!!
is there anything more awkward than a concert on the field at a sporting event? Nobody in the stadium gives a shit and neither does anybody watching on TV
this band sounds like if Maroon 5 was humped by Bruce Springstein
Chris Berman, shut your goddamn mouth
ugh, red LA hat on Joc
I heard the Reds couldn't even sell out this game
Why are we putting these players on a pedestal?
Junior throwing out the first pitch to his dad
he threw from about halfway between the mound and home
Rizzo going too fast, calls timeout. Players are going to get tired if they don't pace themselves
Lobbed it
they should probably do it like BP, do 6-8 and take a walk around the cage
Rizzo 5 so far
He looks kind of gassed
one of the wonderful things about this format is that there are far fewer "back back backs" from Chris Berman
the rounds after the first are going to be poor, they are going to be so tired
it's only a matter of time before one of the kids in the outfield get nailed with a liner
Do they get extra points for that?
It's not fair for the guy going first - he has to go the whole time. the guy going second just has to match him. There should be some incentive made to keep a guy in the box, like maybe reseeding them based on first round homers
Didn't Rizzo get some kind of bonus time?
he got bonus time for hitting long homers, over 425 feet or something. Seems more like a penalty to me.
"you mean I have to keep hitting?"
Prince is acting like he's been here before
Fielder's gonna need some oxygen after this
and a sandwich
ugh, hillbilly Reds fans, like Cards fans but without the infuriating sense of superiority
how can that be 428 when it hit just above the 404 sign?
Much less admirin' time this year
What was Fielder's longest HR?
The Boone in the announcer's booth saying it's good to see how sound and short the hitter's swings are. That sounds like a shot at Joc
I thought I saw a 495 but the graphic didnt stay up very long
back back back back...SHUT THE FUCK UP CHRIS BERMAN!
IT'S A TIE
Frazier!
It's amazing how the slo-mo replays show that these guys don't blink during a swing
I thought the format was gonna suck. I was wrong. This is pretty fun to watch.
Twitter is unanimous about it!
Down goes Fielder! Down goes Fielder!
Choke, Machado!
where's Berman for this round? off getting a roast beef sandwich? and another sandwich?
Machado at 10 so far. I don't see Joc beating that
@FB, 5:55p: Some baby-back-back-back-back-back-back ribs?
me neither
I really hope he doesnt
Machado: 12
John Morrell..the po' mans Farmer John.
@Orel - ugh
and probably yes
hehe good call, Spank
Joc has such a corkscrew of a swing
that one wasnt a homer, got a hand from a fan
Holy shit he's doing it
who is throwing his BP?
JOC!
one of those shouldn't have counted
ssshhhhh FB
Did you see Joc go opposite field for a few dingers?
Yay home runs
this new format does kick ass.
Joc long 487?
He made that look so easy!
something like that Orel. that's the one that almost exited stage right center field.
He just looks so unassuming. Kid rakes
If I were an Angels fan, I would worry about Pujols doing the HRD
When did Pujols become The Rock?
Pujols looks gassed but he beats Bryant
Joc vs. Pujols. Joc's got this
Damn. Pulgas has aged quickly. that wasn't impressive at all.
Just was reminded Joc & Pujols have bonded. Even cooler
I wonder if MLB tested this new HRD format with minor leaguers
ESPN Stats & Info @ESPNStatsInfo 3m
Top 5 longest HR of Round 1 (@statcast)
1. Joc Pederson 487
2. Prince Fielder 474
3. Manny Machado 469
4. Pederson 468
5. Josh Donaldson 465
Berman doing his best Steiner impressions on weak fly balls.
Frazier looks gassed. Finals totals going to be low
Pederson needs to hit a quick dozen and then he'll be cool
Eric Davis sighting
Eric Davis looks younger than some current players
I always liked Davis, more than Straw, when they were Dodgers. He was more of a guy you could root for than Darryl
I bet he's better than Alex Guerrero
C'mon Joc!
Joc looks off right out the gate
1
3
that's a wrap. Joc's trippin'
All outta sync
5
6
7!
8!
9!
how did he turn on #8?
9 it is. Good job, Joc!
that's fine
Oh wait, bonus time.
BonusTime™
wow, 3 in the last 30
a dozen
of all the guys in this competition, I think Joc has the least chance of this messing up his swing. I think the reps might actually do him good
why am i nervous?
those bonus homers looming large
i think Pulgas got this
Joc goes first again, I wonder if he has any legs left
i think he has some steam left,FB. he just needs to get on a roll.
that long swing is feeling extra long now
Joc in the Finals!
what is up with Berman's hair? Did he go to the barber and ask for The Daulton?
Joc's on fire! 12 with :43 + BonusTime™ left
jesus christmas! 14 for Joc
noice
I have the sound off. Who is that with Joc's brother?
I think I'm homer drunk now!
Homer Simpson drunk is pretty drunk!
they have some awful homemade signs there park, reminds me of the ones in Major League
ESPN couldn't have planned it any better
that's a wrap. damn
nice job, Joc
dammit, really wanted to have a "down goes frazier" headline. Oh well
Damn, good show
finally an HRD performance to not be ashamed of
noice job,Joc. way to represent.
Joe Torre in to present the trophy. Somewhere Scott Proctor is cursing
GOD DAMMIT.
Goodnight all
Apparently some people are saying that Frazier didn't let the ball hit the ground before waiting for the next pitch?
HOME RUN DERBY IS RIGGED
In the tradition of Bobby Thompson...Todd Frazier and brother cheated. They were not allowing the ball to hit the ground before next pitch.
Mrs Dusty didn't add extra time to the DVR recording tonight so I didn't get to see the final round. (cries)
Nonetheless I feel pretty safe in claiming there was some bullshit home cooking.
watch the replay,holmes
yeah there were times when a Frazier homerun would land and there would be a quick cut to another ball already hit into mid air.
They even mentioned his cheating during the broadcast. One of the announcers talked to Frazier's brother (pitcher) and he said, "I'm throwing it early because Todd is yelling at me to throw it!" Home plate ump was paid off by the home team.
home field advantage, locos. it is what it is.
This years homerun derby was a lot of fun to watch and was so glad to see everyone do well but mostly our young power hitter Joc Peterson.... Was good to see all the players showing respect with one another that was a class act.
