World Series Game 3 Thread: Oct 26 vs. Red Sox, 5p

Walker Buehler vs. Rick Porcello

Failure was the overarching theme of the first two games of this World Series. Failure to execute at the plate. Failure to execute out of the pen. And, maybe most importantly, failure to get a third out. The Sox are ungodly good with two outs. Remember when "TWO OUT MADNESS!" was our thing? It was our thing, wasn't it? Maybe way back when.

Speaking of way back when, a lot is being made of the '65 and '81 Dodgers both being down 0-2 and coming back to win the Series. That's neat and all, but letting the past die has worked before in this Series and we need it to work again. Make new history, Dodgers. We've waited long enough.

Bring your broom, Broom Boy! The Dodgers need a sweep at home!

Just like the end of The Last Jedi, the future begins with the young: Walker Buehler on the mound. Joc and Cody back in the starting lineup. Seize the day, boys.

GO BLUE!

NLCS Game 4 Thread: Oct 16 vs. Brewers, 6p

Dick Mountain vs. Gio Gonzalez

Last night's loss was a breaking point for a lot of people. Fans turned on players. Players turned on fans. The offense turned on scoring opportunities. It was a mess.

But that's in the past. And it has to stay there, if the Dodgers are to have any hope of winning this series. Molly Knight said it best on Twitter today:
Nothing more to say, really. Play better or go home.

What's it going to be, Dodgers?

Game 28 Thread: May 4 @ Rays, 4p

Death Star.

Tropicana Field roof.

Alex Wood (1-2, 4.82) vs. Drew Smyly (1-3, 2.60).

In the spirit of Star Wars Day, we bring you a comparison of two structures. One of these places is the soulless home of an evil empire — and it also holds Trayce Thompson's home run ball from yesterday's game.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer

Look, we'd be remiss as proper Sons if we didn't post this (albeit late):

As one of the Sons said earlier, "Damn you John Williams!"

Meanwhile, Mark Hamill had this to say about Thursday's Dodgers-Giants game:

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Spoiler-Free) Review

If there is one movie that we've mentioned most during the course of this blog's nine-year journey, it's Star Wars. And with the first Star Wars movie release during this fine blog's tenure, it's only fitting that we give Episode VII: The Force Awakens a little bit of love.

Through manipulating the space-time continuum, I was able to watch this movie early...and came away not disappointed whatsoever.

All of the foundations that we fondly recall from the original trilogy is there, in Episode VII: the epic scope of the story; the evil villain and his legion; the prevailing hope of the light side of the force. The space battle scenes are dizzying, with amazing camera angles and speeds. The fancical creatures nonchalantly wandering through the background, unlike in the prequel trilogy less dependent upon CGI wizardry, seem believable and almost comfortable. The planet landscapes fill the viewer with awe (especially in 3D). The primary droid character, BB-8, is adorable. And all of the main actors: Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo, have solid acting chops that surpass the expectations from their short resumes (Rey and Finn, in particular, were both really strong and extremely believable).

I loved the fact that there are multiple winks back to the original trilogy, from commonly said lines to a cantina scene that echoes Mos Eisley, to humorous turns used to cut the tension at appropriate times. Having familiar characters like Han Solo, Leia Organa, C-3PO, R2-D2, Chewbacca, Nien Nunb, and even Admiral Ackbar re-take the main stage, is a wonderful throwback (and I imagine, for the seven people who haven't seen the original trilogy, might be a little hard to follow). But it's like the Han Solo line from the early Episode VII trailer: when he says to Chewie "we're home", one can't help but feel nostalgic and warm and fuzzy inside just like we did 32 to 37 years ago.

And one gets that feeling right from the opening sequence, which dutifully follows the opening horizon-line fading words canon, into a pretty fast-paced, J.J. Abrams-typical quick-character development scene. One understands good and bad right from the start, and your introduction to two key characters comes effortlessly. And the pacing isn't always quick from then on in, but it does find the right places to crescendo.

If there's any complaint I had--and it is a mild one--it's that Episode VII plays it extremely safe. On many of the scenes, you can tell far in advance where they are going, often because the sets are either deliberately derivative or the constructs seem way too obvious (for example, as one planet starts to crumble, the earth is obviously going to separate two warring characters). It doesn't hurt the tension any, or make the dramatic parts any less meaningful or impactful. But there didn't seem to be many of those killer world-rocking twists like we had at the end of Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back (that said, Episode VIII is perfectly set up for at least one, if not two, killer plot reveals and / or twists).

But I guess the most important thing is, J.J. Abrams (and co-writers Lawrence Kasdan and Michael Arndt) successfully reignited all of the majesty of the original trilogy, almost making one forget the dramatic and plot-dragging missteps of the prequels. They've been able to put together a good story that should spark imagination, curiosity, and excitement in a whole new generation of fans, while paying great reverence and respect to the past. I can't wait to take my kids, and see if their eyes light up just like mine did back in 1977.

Palate Cleanser: New Star Wars Poster

Game 127 Thread: August 28 vs. Cubs, 7p

Clayton Kershaw (10-6, 2.29) vs. Jason Hammel (7-45, 3.35).

With Kershaw on the mound, immediately following his recent imploring of his teammates to play with greater urgency, I'm assuming we're going to get a pretty solid performance from our starter. The question is if our offense, without Howie Kendrick and potentially without Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez, can put up much resistance.

If we can just mark Hammel early in the game, we might be able to send the Cubs (who have a better record than the Dodgers, even though they're in third place and 8.5 games out) to their third straight loss. Look, it's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

Game 107 Thread: Aug. 5 @ Phillies, 4p

Brett Anderson (5-6, 3.14) vs. Aaron Harang (5-11, 3.97).

Old friend alert! The last-place Phils are 8-2 in their last ten, and the Giants have Bumgarner starting today (why does it always seem like he's starting for them?). Dodgers' lead is two; pray they don't shorten it any further.

Game 101 Thread: July 28 vs. A's, 7p

We're home.

Brett Anderson (5-5, 3.33) vs. Sonny Gray (10-4, 2.30)

First home game since July 12th! Dodgers have come out of the break playing .500 ball, the Giants have move to within a half a game, and we still don't know what moves the front office is planning.

Hope this home cooking will settle our uneasy stomachs!

Game 47 Thread: May 29 @ Cardinals, 5p

Eh, he's no Zack Greinke.

Mike Bolsinger (3-0, 0.71) vs. John Lackey (2-3, 3.18).

Okay, Magic Mike. You've come out of nowhere to become the Dodgers' second-best starter, and for that we are grateful. But we fans always want more more more, and we note that your three wins came against the sub-.500 Marlins, Rockies and Padres.

In fact, with the exception of a certain club up north, no team has given the Dodgers a seriously hard time this season. That could change today, when the Dodgers roll into Busch (man, the stripper jokes just write themselves) to face the red-hot Cardinals (18-5 at home!).

And not only is this a battle of two first-place teams, but the Dodgers will face the Cards in 7 of their next 11 games. Help us, Magic Mike, you're our only hope.

Just a t-shirt? That's no mystery! I'm hoping the giveaway is Boba Fett, having made his way out of the Sarlacc pit.

Game 142 Thread: September 6 vs. D'bags, 6p

Hyun-Jin Ryu (14-6, 3.14) vs. Chase Anderson (8-6, 3.75)

We're pretty much in the mode of a) shitting or b) getting off the pot. We cannot pull away from the Gnats as they, inextricably, keep generating offense and we, inextricably, CANNOT generate consistent offense. Giants won again today versus the de-fanged Tigers to narrow the Dodgers' NL West lead to 1.5.

It is truly time to defecate or yield the toilet to another, more deserving defecator.

A Fault in Our Star Wars: Episode One

In searching through the extensive, covert SoSG archives, I came across the following full length article.... in the f'ing draft folder. Like the lost episodes of the Honeymooners or the recently unearthed outakes from Star Wars...

... I now present the family DeShields experience at Dodgers Star Wars night. Circa 2013.

Would have posted this yesterday, but I had a layer of 100 Degree grime to powerwash. Avoid the visual... if you can.

Most importantly, the Dodgers were who we thought they were. The Spankers of the lowly Padres. In the time it took the family DeShields to walk from our seats to the car, the Dodgers put the final five nails in the monastery. But what of Star Wars night? What of theme? Of symbolism? Of Grand Moff Tarkin?

On a 100 Degree day, one of the less appreciated sights is a long line. Or... TWO OF THEM.

One for shirts, and one for entering the all you can eat pavilion. The problem - every third person in the t-shirt line had no idea they needed vouchers. So after waiting for 20 minutes, they came up empty handed. Not. Cool.

Except for the DeShields, whose family is now sporting truly kick ass nerd wear.

Though it might take my son two thousand days to grow into it. (Sidebar: what is the deal with Dodgers giveaways for kids? Between this and the Child Replica jersey, I'm convinced the Dodgers base their kids sizes on those roided up Little League World Series behemoths).

My boys did themselves proud in the All You Can Eat Pavilion. The rest of the ravenous crowd there, however, left me aghast.

I've expressed my issues with Dodgers Star Wars Night in the past.

As far as I can tell, there was a couple of guys dressed like storm trooper. So I heard. I never saw this with my own eyes, so it could be propaganda. The pics of the players wielding light sabers is always good for a "Hey, it's Juan Uribe holding a light saber instead of a churro" chuckle.

Showing Han kiss Leia on the Kiss Cam was cute. Albeit, this would have gotten more of a response.

On one hand, I'm glad the promotions don't overpower the game itself. (Unlike the wave, which I've now been over for almost 30 years.) That being said, I think the Dodgers could amp up the theme a bit. Have Jek Porkins throw the first pitch.

Or let people in costume do a lap around the field before the game begins. Heck, combine it with Bark at the Park.

Overall, the little DeShields had a great time, which was the whole point in enduring the indignities that is the all you can eat pavilion. And that t-shirt really is... as nerd-wear goes... pretty damn cool. But for 2014, it might be time to put a bit more thought in making the Star Wars pop off the screen and onto the field.

Post-Game 124 Thread: The Force Was Not With Jamey Wright

BREWERS 6, DODGERS 3

Zack Greinke struggled through five innings of no-run, but 99-pitch ball, and then the Brewers dug into the soft cushy underbelly of the Dodgers' bullpen in the eighth, allowing Milwaukee to take tonight's game 6-3. The Dodgers had stretched a 2-0 lead all the way through seven innings, but Jamey Wright was hit hard in the eighth inning, loading the bases and allowing the Brewers to tie the game at two.

Brandon League got Richie Weeks on a strikeout, but then Lyle Overbay knocked a bases-clearing double to make it 5-2. The Dodgers clawed back a run in the bottom of the eighth, which Carlos Frias promptly gave back in the ninth. 6-3, final; Dodgers open up the homestand with a loss on Star Wars Night, no less.

Yasiel Puig had 2 RBI and went 3-for-4 on the night. A.J. Ellis and Miguel Rojas each went 0-for-4 and have turned the bottom of our lineup into an abyss. It's depressing to have the Brewers steal one today, but at least the Giants lost in extras (letting a 3-0 lead evaporate late before losing).
