On Wednesday night, the Dodgers lost to the Padres, managing only 1 run off of Eric Freaking Stults. THAT'S BAD.

On Wednesday night, Carl Crawford didn't start, and only managed a weak groundout in his pinch-hitting appearance. THAT'S BAD.

On Wednesday night, the Giants won a protest to keep that rain-shortened game going, erasing the 1/2 game the Dodgers picked up in the NL West race. THAT'S BAD.

Game 77 Thread: June 22 @ Padres, 1p

Who knew we'd stoop so low as to combine
 an old bad pun with a new meme?

Hyun-Jin Ryu (8-3, 3.18) vs. Eric Stults (2-9, 5.76)

I hate to bag on an Old Friend, but my god does Stults suck. I asked our summer intern to do some research on Stults' stint with the Dodgers. First thing she came up with was a list of other pitchers on the 2009 team, which was Stults' last season with us. It's not pretty, folks (the list, I mean, not the intern; she's cute). Here's a sample:

Sherrill, Vargas, Belisario, Broxton, Troncoso, Haeger, Schlichting, Mota, Milton, McDonald, Elbert, Wade, Schmidt, Leach, and Ohman

Oh man is right. Times was hard. Hey, speaking of Scott Elbert, word is that after about 14 Tommy John surgeries, a hip replacement, and a sex change operation, Elbert may be ready to re-join the team and contribute from the pen. The more the merrier if it keeps Paul Maholm from ever touching a baseball again.

We close this homestand (a Petco homestand, if you will) with today's matinee and then fly to Kansas City to take on a surprisingly hot Royals team that figures to be a good test. Sending the team off with a series win would go a long ways to keeping up the mostly positive momentum/foam party. And, no hard feelings, Eric Stults. You made a great memory for me when I was at the Yard and you beat the Gnats 8-0 on a complete game, four-hit shutout.

Post-Game 56 Thread: Puigasm

DODGERS 2, PADRES 1

Are you kidding me. Yasiel Puig was fairly impressive at the plate (2 for 4 with two singles, one a bloop to left and the other a hard chopper to right), but it was the closing play of the game that announced Yasiel Puig does not intend to return to the minors.

In the ninth inning with a one-run lead, Brandon League was doing his usual gasoline-can act. With one out, he walked Chris Denorfia. Then he served up a 95-mph meatball to Kyle Blanks, who crushed it to deep right field. Then, well...just look above. (Vin's call here.)

Credit to AGon and SVS, each with a solo home run off Eric Stults, and Stephen Fife, who went 5.1 innings. Moylan, Paco and Kenley did the rest.

Game 8 Thread: April 10 @ Pads, 7p

Chad's back! Recycled joke!

Chad Billingsley (0-0, -.--) vs. Eric Stults (1-0, 0.00).

After yesterday's calamitous debut at Petco — "Wasteful at bat and sloppy on the mound," per Ken Gurnick — the Dodgers look to tone down the DPs and tone up the pitching.

Billingsley, who has a 2.62 career ERA against the Pads, somehow avoided Tommy John surgery due in part to an off-season regimen of platelet-rich plasma injections. He comes off the DL (displacing Tim Federowicz) to face old friend Stults, who threw five scoreless innings against the Mets last week.

The Dodgers went 11-7 against the Padres last season. If they want a winning record against them again, now would be a good time to start, don't you think?

Too blind with rage to recap. Instead here's a picture of some baby bats.

UPDATE (11:59 p.m.): Okay, Eric Freakin' Stults? Seriously? He of the 88 ERA+ for the Dodgers? The guy they sold to the Hiroshima Carp? And our half-billion dollars' worth of bats can't even string together a few hits against him?

And Clayton Kershaw scratches and claws to keep the Dodgers in the game, then Matt Guerrier gives it all up on a two-run bomb? This team is beyond frustrating.

UPDATE (12:31 a.m.): Boxberger? Brach? Layne? Zero hits against these guys. In fact, zero hits in the last four innings.

Also, Matt Kemp is hurting. He needs a day off.

UPDATE (10:52 a.m.): Not to mention the Giants finally lost. That was a golden opportunity to gain some ground in the division.

Eric Stults throws in yesterday's game. He pitched three scoreless innings but gave up three earned runs in the fourth.

The Dodgers finish up a testing four-day, six-game stretch Monday with simultaneous split-squad games, plus a Minor League game. In a game against the Brewers at Maryvale, likely Opening Day starter Clayton Kershaw will pitch the bulk of the innings, with Russ Ortiz following. At Camelback Ranch-Glendale against the Angels, Rule 5 pick Carlos Monasterios starts, with relievers Jonathan Broxton, George Sherrill, Jeff Weaver and Justin Miller on the list to pitch. And in a camp game, Charlie Haeger is scheduled to pitch five innings. Haeger, Monasterios, Ortiz, Weaver and Miller are fighting for jobs and these games could be crucial in deciding who advances in the competition.

I've eased up on pointing out typos, because there's more text out there than ever and hey, everybody makes mistakes. But I couldn't pass up this dandy. From "Stults pain-free after rehab start" at Dodgers.com:

"When I originally thought about it, I was like, 'How important is a thumb?'" [Eric] Stults said. "But when you really think about it being a pitcher, it's pretty important as far as being able to feel the pitchers."

(Emphasis mine.) Obviously, Jay Buhner agrees.

Stults Earns His Keep

A pitching update from Tony Jackson:

Eric Stults is going to stay in the rotation and will pitch again on Thursday against the Giants. James McDonald is going back to the bullpen, although Torre was adamant that this wasn't a reflection of the fact he didn't pitch well on Friday night. It was more about the team's needs, and the team needs another reliever. McDonald has a better track record, admittedly in a small sample size, coming out of the pen than Stults does, and Stults has a better track record starting than McDonald (admittedly a VERY small sample size where McDonald is concerned). What this does for now is leave the Dodgers with a four-man rotation, which will be sufficient to get them through this week.

Wolf Placed on DL, Stults Called Up

The MRI isn't supposed to happen until tomorrow, but there was no reason not to DL him now if he isn't going to pitch for two weeks anyway. My guess is Stults will be a long reliever (he was supposed to start tonight for Las Vegas) and Houlton will take Wolf's rotation spot until he returns.

Randy Wolf has been placed on the 15-day disabled list, and the Dodgers have recalled pitcher Eric Stults. Stults is 5-5 with a 7.11 ERA this season. With numbers like that, this might be just the way to boost Brett Tomko's confidence.
