Month-Old Cheese!

So, remember SoSG March Madness? Well, we're finally awarding the following prizes to Jason and his lone supporter, Curious Gene. As the actual champion, Jason will have his choice of the following two prizes:

  • Guest Post! Yup, we will let you write a post on SoSG, about whatever subject you choose. It can be a game thread, a post-game thread, a piece on your favorite player, a piece on your favorite anti-aging cream, an at-game recap, an at-home recap, an AT-AT recap, a puzzle, a solution, an appreciation of Deltalina, a general venting, a statistical analysis demonstrating how Brian Traxler was underrated, a photo gallery of your favorite spring flowers, or something else. The only rules are: 1) it can't be (truly) offensive, 2) it can't exceed 1,000 words or contain more than 4 photos, and 3) we (SoSG) get editorial rights and final cut.
  • Magnet Schedule If you're not the writing/sharing/blogging type, we'll send you a nifty magnet schedule instead.

And CG, you get whichever option Jason doesn't want.

So Jason, let us know which prize you want either in the comment or via email, and we'll establish details from there.

Congrats again to both of you!

Congrats for vanquishing, in order, Curious Gene, Greg NoPhoto, QuadSevens, Dusty Baker, and Josh S on your way to the championship! Your FvD crown was no fluke. And congrats Curious Gene for being the only one to correctly pick Jason as the winner.

Prizes to be announced soon*

*definition of 'soon' left open. But we will get to it eventually. There's a lot for us to sort out right now with the beginning of the season upon us...

SoSG March Madness - Final Four Set!

Looks like there will be no repeat champ. Nor will there be a Quad vs Loney Fan matchup. What there will be, however, are a lot of J's in the Final Four. Here's the updated bracket:

And here are the bets still in play:

  • Dusty Baker: MLASF, Brazilian Dodger Fan, Fred's Brim, Meaniebeanie, rbnlaw, Keven C
  • Josh S: Mr Customer
  • J Steve: Mr F
  • Jason: Curious Gene

So I'd just like to note that we're down to four guys who, in the last half-round, took an average of 1 minute to comment. And since we don't have a second hand in our timestamps, here are the very-possibly-relevant tie-breaker rules:

  • The timestamp of two adversaries who comment in the same minute will be treated as identical, regardless of which came first, except in the case where the two comment in the same minute in both halves, and the same adversary was first both times. In that case, that player wins.
  • If the net difference in a matchup is zero, there will be a third OT comment-time post (i.e., "Final Four, Overtime: Comment-Time!"), relevant only to those that tied. It will be posted sometime within the same or the following day of the previous comment-time post. Whichever adversary comments first will win.

I think that takes care of tiebreaker possiblities. If not, or if unclear, ask here. Otherwise, relax over the weekend, then be back to hovering mode Monday!

Elite Eight, 2nd Half: Comment-Time!

Ok, all bets are in so the second half is ready to begin!

Here are the halftime scores:

  • (4) Dusty leads (3) S Dittmore by 1:38
  • (3) Jason leads (1) Quad by 0:16
  • (3) J Steve leads (4) Loney Fan by 0:39
  • (1) Josh S leads (2) Neeebs by 0:01

And here are the bets in play:

  • Dusty Baker: MLASF, Brazilian Dodger Fan, Fred's Brim, Meaniebeanie, rbnlaw, Keven C
  • Josh S: Mr Customer
  • J Steve: Mr F
  • Steve Dittmore: Greg Photo
  • QuadSevens: Gagne's Lucky Glasses
  • Neeebs: Betsy
  • Jason: Curious Gene
  • Loney Fan: Loney Fan

Comment away!

Make Your Pick

This is not a comment-time post. In fact it is for those not in the SoSG March Madness tournament.

So far, some of you have placed your bet (see rules here). The rest of you still have until 1pm PT today to pick the winner of SoSG March Madness 2010 Champ (comment in this thread). Here are the remaining eight contestants and their current situation:

  • (4) Dusty leads (3) S Dittmore by 1:38
  • (3) Jason leads (1) Quad by 0:16
  • (3) J Steve leads (4) Loney Fan by 0:39
  • (1) Josh S leads (2) Neeebs by 0:01

And here are the bets placed so far:

  • Dusty Baker: MLASF, Brazilian Dodger Fan, Fred's Brim, Meaniebeanie, rbnlaw, Keven C
  • Josh S: Mr Customer
  • J Steve: Mr F
  • Steve Dittmore: Greg Photo
  • QuadSevens: Gagne's Lucky Glasses
  • Neeebs: Betsy
  • Jason: Curious Gene
  • Loney Fan: Nobody

Remember, if you're the only one to pick the champ, you automatically win the prize. If you share the correct pick with others, you are all entered in a random lottery for the prize. Either way, it's riskless money (well, not money, but a prize worth more than any amount of money), so make your pick!

Attention Eliminated Contestants: SoSG March Madness Side Action Available!

Note: This is NOT a comment-time post, so take a deep breath and relax.

If not a comment-time post, then what is this? Well, first it's an update. As you know, it's half-time of the Elite Eight round. Here's where it stands:

  • (4) Dusty leads (3) S Dittmore by 1:38
  • (3) Jason leads (1) Quad by 0:16
  • (3) J Steve leads (4) Loney Fan by 0:39
  • (1) Josh S leads (2) Neeebs by 0:01

Alas, only eight competitors still remain - one quarter of the original field. The purpose of this post is to keep it interesting for the rest of you (as well as for anyone who wasn't entered in the tourney at all). Here's how it works:

  • As stated, there are eight competitors remaining, and you can see above which of these eight hold a halftime lead and by how much. You also have 2 previous rounds of action to observe their commenting prowess.
  • Your task is to pick which remaining competitor you think will win and comment your choice here in this thread before 1pm PT tomorrow. Any picks made after 1pm tomorrow will not count.
  • The eight competitors still in the tourney cannot place a bet. They may, however, lobby for votes.
  • The second half of the Elite Eight will not start until 1:01pm PT tomorrow at the earliest.
  • When the competition is over, all those who correctly picked the champion will be put in a lottery. The winner of the lottery will be selected in a random and transparent way (if you are the only one who correctly picked the champion, you automatically win).
  • The winner of the lottery wins a prize to be revealed soon!

There you have it. I'm not sure how strategization will play out, given that: 1) you are picking a champion knowing of which of the remaining eight hold a halftime lead; 2) you are in competition with all others who pick the correct champion; and 3) your pick will be displayed for all to see once you make it.

But, alas, that's not my concern. I will re-post this tomorrow morning to get more folks to place their bet. Make your choice by 1pm PT tomorrow!

UPDATE: Please make your picks in the new thread instead of here. Thanks.

SoSG March Madness Results Update

Congratulations Elite Eighters (as always, let me know of any errors):

Interestingly, the seeds appear to have some meaning. Not a single 5, 6, 7, or 8 seed has survived.

The next round starts tomorrow, Thursday, or Friday (imagine if the start times for the real NCAA tournament games were this random and unannounced...)!

Sweet 16, 2nd Half: Comment-time!

Here's how the 1st half of the Sweet 16 round went down:

Muno Regional:

  • (4) Dusty Baker leads (1) rbnlaw by 3:41
  • (3) S Dittmore leads (7) jmk by 2:34

Robot Regional:

  • (1) Quad lead (4) Erin by 4:15
  • (3) Jason leads (2) Greg NoPhoto by 0:02

Sock Monkey Regional:

  • (4) Loney Fan leads (8) Fanerman by 1:56
  • (3) J Steve leads (2) Keven C by 0:21

Mr X Regional:

  • (1) Josh leads (5) Mr C by 1:47
  • (2) Neeebs leads (6) Betsy by 0:15

Remaining Questions:

  1. Will Neeebs, J Steve, and particularly Jason hang on to their tenuous half-time leads?
  2. Will the Robot Regional continue to go according to seed?
  3. Will archrivals Loney Fan and QuadSevens continue their collision course to the finals?
  4. Who will win the Fan-bowl (Loney Fan vs Fanerman)?
  5. Will EK make another mistake in scoring?

Find out the answers to all these questions in the comments section!

Mystery Competition Revealed: SoSG March Madness is Back!

Welcome to Season II of SoSG March Madness! This is what you signed up for. Yes, one full year has passed since Neeebs was crowned champion in the 2009 tourney, beating a game but overmatched (and absent) cigarcow. Who, if anyone, will knock off Neeebs and be crowned 2010 champ?

Here's this year's bracket:

Note: there is one spot still open! Comment here if you want it! BWrightson has claimed the last spot, so registration is full.

The rules of the tourney will be essentially identical to last year's, but let's review:

The committee has divided the participants into 4 regionals, and the first four readers to sign up - rbnlaw, Fred's Brim, Josh S, and QuadSevens - are awarded the #1 seeds in each. The rest of the bracket is filled out based on the sequence of subsequent sign-ups*.

Much like the actual NCAA tourney, each round of SoSG March Madness consists of head-to-head matchups which themselves consist of two halves. And each matchup is essentially a competition to see which competitor can comment the fastest. Here's how it'll work:

  • For each round's games, at an unspecified time, we will post something with a headline similar to: "Opening Round, 1st Half: Comment-time!"
  • The round and half indicated in the headline will of course vary, but the trigger word "Comment-time!" is your indication that you must, at all costs, post a comment immediately** upon seeing the post.
  • For each game's '1st half', we will take the time difference, in hours and minutes, between the time each of the two competitors in each head-to-head matchup commented. Although all competitors will be commenting in the same thread, each competitor will only be competing against their specific matchup adversary.
  • At some subsequent time, also unspecified, there will appear a "Comment-time!" post for the 2nd half of that round (i.e., "Opening Round, 2nd Half: Comment-time!").
  • The competitor who commented second in the 1st half will then have to beat his opponent by more than that amount in the 2nd half. If he fails to do so, he is eliminated and his opponent moves on. If he succeeds, his opponent is eliminated and he moves on.
  • Therefore, even if you see your opponent has already beaten you to the punch, you still must comment immediately upon seeing the Comment-time post.
  • So, for example, let's say at 1:23pm on Wednesday, we post the Opening Round 1st Half Comment-time post. Let's also say QuadSevens comments at 2:23pm, and Fite Club doesn't get around to commenting until 4:32pm. So Quad wins the 1st half of that game by 2 hrs, 9 mins.
  • Then, if we post the Opening Round 2nd Half Comment-time post at 8:45am the next day, Fite Club would have to beat Quad to the commenting by 2 hrs 10 mins or more, or he'd be eliminated and Quad would move on to the next round.

Those are the basics. A few more notes:

  • It's possible halves or even rounds will overlap if some competitors really lag in commenting. However, I reserve the right to end a (half-)round at any time (I will allow plenty of time for commenting). Nonetheless, until I do, the previous comment-time posts still remain 'live' and can still be commented on.
  • If neither competitor ever comments in either half of a game, they both lose.
  • All 'Comment-time' posts will be posted between 8:00am PT and 10:00pm PT. So you can sleep easy.
  • The clock does not move during the overnight 'dead time' between 10:00pm to 8:00am. Thus, if one competitor posts at 9:30pm one night and his opponent comments at 8:15am the next morning, it is considered only 45 minutes between comments.
  • Any comments posted during the dead time count and are considered to have been posted at 8:00am the next morning.
  • While we obviously won't reveal the exact date/time that the Comment-Time posts will appear, here are some general guidelines:
    • Opening Round: Between March 17 and 19 (inclusive)
    • Sweet 16 Round: Between March 22 and 24
    • Elite Eight Round: Between March 24 and 26
    • Final Four Round: Between March 29 and March 31
    • Finals Round: Between March 31 and April 2
  • Thus, the first 'Comment-time' post will occur no earlier than 8am this Wednesday morning (if nobody additional signs up to play, rbnlaw and Fred's Brim will have automatic bye's into the Sweet Sixteen Round).
  • The content of your comment doesn't matter, just the time you commented (feel free to comment multiple times - only the timestamp on your first comment will matter).
  • Those not participating in a given round are still welcome to comment.
  • To the two Gregs: again, if one of you could temporarily change your username to something other than Greg, it'd be much appreciated (as to Greg 2's expressed concern: this does not impact any links/routing to any other blogs you may have).

So that's it. Please let us know if you have any questions. Otherwise, rest up over the next 48 hours before the games begin as early as maybe Wednesday but possibly as late as Friday!

*I almost rigged it so the two Gregs would have to face off in the 1st round.
**Twitter will be de-activated during the contest to ensure nobody has an unfair advantage
