Sunday Night Blues

LA Times' Dylan Hernandez enticed my inner-masochist tonight with the headline, Dodgers are just about done with shopping. Hernandez breaks down the load of poop that Ned is leaving under the tree this year for us.

This pretty much sums it up:
Mentioning the well-documented financial restraints imposed on the Dodgers and New York Mets' front offices, [Agent Scott] Boras smirked.

"Normally, they're in the steaks sections," he said of the two cash-strapped teams, "and I found them in the fruits and nuts category a lot."
It definitely appears that the roster and lineup are nearly set. Of course, Colletti points to the fact that our foundation is Clayton Kershaw and Matt Kemp, and he's right - that's not nothin'. But I still can't help but feel like I asked for a shiny new mountain bike for Christmas but all I got was this:

Thus, I'm fragile. So enough with those Prince Fielder rumors. They can't be true, so stop teasing us.

UPDATE: This will also serve as your Monday Blues Thread

Frankly, I'm not sure why people have such a hard on for Prince Fielder. Look at Pujols' contract, $25MM/10 years. Let's just say that the Dodgers are flush with cash and money is no object, Fielder is going to want a contract that's going to be similar to Pujols, not just in dollar but in length! Fielder is 27. A 10 year deal will mean that he will be 37 by the time the contract is done. Does anybody really want a fat Fielder slow jog his way to first base by the time he's 37? I sure don't.

I really agree with you for the most part. It's really a larger issue of knowing that we roughly have the same team as last season (maybe a touch better if Ethier and Uribe and Loney round into better form; maybe a touch worse), and knowing that's not good enough, so a player of Prince's offensive caliber would clearly be an upgrade. But yeah, being saddled with that size contract for him would be a big risk.

IMO this year's team blows. It's yet full of the usual Ned Colletti bullshit love-affair with wily veterans. The lack of imagination on the part of Ned Colletti has been the most frustrating aspect of the McCourt ownership of the Dodgers (for me) and frankly, Colletti should be thanking whatever God he prays to that his ineptitude has been papered over by the larger stories of Frank McCourt's various actions.

And I'm not saying Prince Fielder doesn't have value, of course he does, and if somebody can sign him to a 4 or 5 year deal, they're going to enjoy the fruits of his productivity. But it is not in Fielder's economic interests to go for a deal of that length. And let's not forget who his representation is.

No one's giving Fielder a 10-year deal. That's why Boras's head is exploding.

Thank goodness you tagged that with an IMO, Greg. I wouldn't have known if your statement was opinion or fact without it.

This years team is a .500 club, +/-five games.

Yawn.

i severely dislike ned colletti.

@Greg: Just think...new owner will likely terminate Ned as a first act. If not, damn be him!

MR.F said...

Will the new owner be able to undo all of this offseason's craptastic signings?

@Mr F

Not for another year after this! #TwoYearBackload

No new post for the whole day? Outrageous!

Hey, some of us have to work!

Technically speaking, I am not one of those since I have the rest of the year off.

When were we in the steak section? Fuck you Scott Boras!
Fielder is supposed to get a smaller deal, so him being younger i would have no problem signing him. Most of the contracts are a burn in the long run but hey aren't we tired of this shit? This is supposed to be a team that can bite a bullet like that. Mr. New Owner should be glad if they actually started winning once in a while that i don't think he's care about the contract. Why i don't buy this BS about "payroll restrictions" when you dumped a wad of cash on a ton of MSB.
