Marlins Mermaids: Episode 3 (Revenge of the Glenda)

I'm posting this email early on as to not spoil your lunchtime appetite. But if you can suffer through the other 1:50 focusing on the Marlins Manatees tryouts, you can catch perhaps our favorite Marlin Mermaid, Glenda, at 0:14 and 1:24! At least, I think that's Glenda; frankly I get a little flushed when I see her.

Special thanks to SoSG friend erin of Robots Took My Medicine for pointing us toward the video. Great to see you again, erin!

Game 53 Thread: May 28 vs. Fish, 7p

Hiroki Kuroda (5-4, 3.11) vs. Brian Sanches (3-1. 1.52).

Oh, Glenda. The Fish haven't been the same since you've left the Mermaids squad (as far as I can tell without violating my restraining order). And despite being only two games behind the Phillies for the NL East crown, the Marlins have now dropped the first of three games to a lowly Dodgers team who hasn't won a series in over a month (not counting the four-game series in Pittsburgh where game four was rained out). There's no way that these Fish can get hooked again, right?

Prior Glenda SoSG material can be referenced here.

SoSG Announces New Cause: Mermaid Safety

"Even I think the name is stupid!"

Won't anyone think of the Mermaids? Dolphin Stadium is now Land Shark Stadium. (No, it's not a joke.) From "Marlins will play in a 'Shark' tank" at Marlins.com:

On Friday, Dolphin Stadium was officially renamed "Land Shark Stadium," as part of a Miami Dolphins business partnership with singer Jimmy Buffett.

Land Shark Lager is a beer developed by Buffett, who is considering buying into the NFL's Dolphins, which are owned by Stephen Ross.

Another reason to be glad Dodger Stadium is still Dodger Stadium! Now, where are Alessandra, Chelsea and Glenda? They need protecting!

Marlins Mermaids: Episode 4 (A New Hoki)

It looks like Sons of Steve Garvey isn't the first place that considered voting for one's favorite Marlins Mermaid. In fact, here in Episode IV--A New Hoki, we reveal recently found information that this has all been done before, by Marlins fans.

And the winner of the Marlins' Mermaid Bracket Challenge, serendipitously enough, was: SoSG's very own winner, Glenda!

Wow, a SoSG victory trophy to go with her Mermaids Bracket Challenge victory. Glenda is unstoppable!

Why I Joined The Blue Babes

Hi Dodger fans and blog readers. I'm new to this whole blog thing but in the spirit of publicizing the Blue Babes, I thought I would write a couple of words as well.

I've been a professional dancer for a long time, having been trained in hip hop, tap, jazz, and even some ballet. But the opportunity to join the Blue Babes was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for me simply because of one reason:

I love to party at Dodger Stadium.

I think this fascination started about five years ago, when I had just moved to Los Angeles and was dating this guy who was a big Dodger fan. We probably went to twenty or so games that first year, always getting to games early so we could tailgate a bit in the parking lot (that lot back behind the 76 station was always key as those cops with the segways never made it down there to check people!), and then buy a cheap seat in the left field pavilion just to hang out and enjoy the beer, the night sky, and the crazy fans.

I love being with the rowdy friends. I love starting the wave out there in the pavilion (you may have seen me running up the aisle wearing a short tank top; it never fails to fire up the crowd's cheers!). And I love the fact that we can talk with Manny and whomever is warming up in the bullpen all game long. Sometimes, we're able to find out where the players are hanging out after the game, and we can get VIP access at a club with them. It's great. I love hanging around the Dodgers, because the Dodgers love to party!

Now that I've joined the Blue Babes, I've met some of the coolest friends around and we've made a sport out of going out and chasing boys after dance practice (no, I'm not with that loser guy who introduced me to the Dodgers; he fell asleep one day in the car during a pre-game tailgate, and I never looked back). I mean, the dancing is fun and all, so long as you don't come to practice too sloshed and accidentally step off the top of the dugout roof (sorry Glenda! get well soon!). But it's the partying of the posse that is keeping me pumped up.

Are you into the Dodgers? Do you want to party with us during, and after, the game? I'd love to meet you and see if you've got what it takes to keep up with me and my gang of trouble-makers. It ain't for the weak-hearted!

Hope to see you soon!

Julie

Game 124 Thread: Aug. 19 @ Marlins, 4p

Apparently the Marlins "Energy Team" has replaced the Marlins Mermaids at Marlins Park. Where have you gone, Glenda?

Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-3, 2.91) vs. Jose Fernandez (8-5, 2.45).

After having their ten-game winning streak snapped by Hole Camels and the Phils, the Dodgers take their talents to Miami, where they will take on all the Marlins. Every last one. Rookie Fernandez is good news for the moribund franchise, as the Marlins have won five of his last six starts.

It seems petty to call out Hanley Ramirez for his ham-fisted heroics yesterday, so let's instead concentrate on his return to his former home park. Do they activate the outfield home run monstrosity sculpture for former players? Probably not. Nevertheless, the new streak starts today!

A school of Marlins Mermaids before yesterday's game.

The 2010 Marlins Manatees...those wannabes.

Vicente Padilla (0-1, 14.54) vs. Josh Johnson (0-1, 7.20).

Gameday

COMMENTS: .500, baby! A strong outing by Billingsley and a stellar one by Kuroda have brought the Dodgers back to sea level, and Padilla can amend for his awful Opening Day start by keeping the Dodgers in today's game.

THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT

REASONS TO BELIEVE

  • it's early, but Furcal, Martin and DeWitt each have an OBP of .500
  • speed on the basepaths (James Loney?)
  • Colletti's bench strategy may be paying off: Belliard, GA and Johnson are off to strong starts at the plate
  • a win today would give the Dodgers at least a break-even road trip going into Tuesday's home opener

Marlins Mermaids: Episode 2 (Attack of the Mermaids)

I'm been involved in a lot of M&A activity in my career, so it pained me to realize that I had violated one of the fundamental principles before jumping into the highly charged SoSG debate about the Florida Marlins Mermaids. Don't place your bet until you've done your full due diligence. Whoops.

What began as simple admiration for the 2009 Mermaids advertising campaign quickly morphed into an all-out knock-down drag-out comment-fest, culminating in head-to-head showdown post just to stop everyone's yipping. And I, probably like many of the SoSG readers,..."judged a book by its cover."

So let me repent. The fine Mermaids of the Florida Marlins, who were kind enough to respond to our email inquiries, actually helped direct me toward some links that can help educate all of us on the fine women of the original poster:

Chelsea hails from Portland, Oregon. She likes fettuccine alfredo and describes herself as humorous, intuitive, and loyal. In other words, if you betray her, she'll know about it before you tell her, and will be laughing all the way to the bank (after sending you to the hospital).

Alessandra is a hometown Miami girl and likes the fast cars (citing a Lamborghini Diablo; how lucky am I that she loves my wheels?). She describes herself as lovable, ambitious, and cute, which I suppose is like a type-A Beanie Baby.

Glenda is not only the good witch, she is another local Miami resident who fondly recalls childhood memories of going to baseball games with her grandfather (funny how 1993, the Marlins' first year, suddenly seems so long ago). She has "classy trendy" style and describes herself as unique, adventurous, and ambitious.

Ariel was 16 years old back in 1989, which makes her 35 now, though she doesn't look like she's aged that much. She is the youngest of seven sisters and has a pretty close relationship with her sometimes demanding father, and has had problems in the past hanging out with the wrong crowds. Her fashion style is pretty understated, making use of common items as clothing. She describes herself as musical, adventuresome, headstrong, and, most recently, biped.

The links also lead to some galleries meriting further scrutiny. Enjoy.

I have to confess that a week ago, I had cast my vote one way, but now that I have done more due diligence, my priorities have shifted. If asked to re-vote today, I would choose differently...

Let the debate continue!

UPDATED 12n to include the obvious joke. My bad, I don't know how I could have missed this.

Post-Game 37 Thread: Glendariffic!

Marlins Mermaid Glenda would never root against her team, but she does not begrudge you cheering for the Dodgers.
