8/16, 4p: Kenta Maeda vs Vince Velasquez
DODGERS 15, PHILLIES 5. Utley: 90-second standing ovation before first PA, solo HR, grand slam, 5 RBI. Dodgers in sole possession of first place for first time since May 10.
8/17, 4p: Scott Kazmir vs Jake Thompson
DODGERS 7, PHILLIES 2. AGon: 2 HR, 5 RBIs
8/18, 4p: Bud Norris Ross Stripling vs Jerad Eickhoff
PHILLIES 5, DODGERS 4
Didn't we just play these guys? Anyway, a Philadelphia series is all about Chase Utley's homecoming, so expect to hear plenty about that. And we better take at least two of three here — enough with letting the Giants stay in first place.

Wow. Standing O for Chase before his first AB
And then a backwards K. Haha
Everybody strikes out in the 1st
Maeda: 3 pitches, 1 out
Dammit, Reddick tagged it but Herrera makes a nice running catch
Grandal two-out single
Solo HR. Phils 1-0
Ugh, Dodgers strand Howie at second
KKKK
KKKKK
55 pitches thru 4 for Maeda
Howie 2-run HR!
HOWIE
Rancho Ardiendo situation
HBP and BB make it 7-2
Now another walk from Joc makes it 8-2.
13-2? Dayum!
Utley grand slam. Of course
Baez 2-run HR. Of course
Wow Utley. Wonder if he got a curtain call for the GS...
Not only did he get a curtain call for the GS, he got one earlier for his solo HR. I've never seen an opposing player get a curtain call, let alone two

Folks in the press box remember standing ovations for Ripken, Dawson, Daulton and Thome homers. But not a curtain call.

Watching the young rebuilding Phillies makes me realize the Dodgers have it all wrong their approach of trying to balance winning now, with preserving minor league talent for the future.
The Dodgers should have gutted the farm system the past few years for guys like Hamels, Cespedes, etc. That doesn't guarantee a WS ring, but it greatly improves the chances. This fine balancing act they're doing is great if they're content with simply making the playoffs every year.
If you want to win a ring, you gotta be willing to sacrifice talent and be okay with following up a WS championship with a couple of years of rebuilding. Teams like the Phillies, Yankees, Red Sox go ALL IN and then are okay with the post WS drought.
That means no Seager, no Urias. Plus instead of Hamels they could have traded for someone like Price. As the Giants have proved, you just need to reach the postseason. Everything after that is a crapshoot — although based on past experience, I don't see us going far if we make the playoffs. So maybe you're right.
Giants have a day game with Pittsburgh. They were up 4-0 early, but I've just checked again and it's 6-4 PIT, B6!
Nicasio in trouble for the Bucs. Two on, two out, 6-4 PIT, B6
Pirates escape when Nunez goes down on three pitches. 6-4 Pirates through 6
That's former Dodger Juan Nicasio
Nicasio poised to give this game back to the Giants in the seventh, with a leadoff walk to Pagan
He gets out of it. To the 8th we go
To the 9th!
Going to the bottom of the ninth in SF, still 6-4 PIT
two on, none out for SF
bases loaded. None out. Oyster Pubes up, down 6-4.
This is not good
Pirates trade a DP for a run. I'll take it
Giants lose!
oyster pubes with a run-scoring DP, to make it 6-5, and then Brandon Crawford flies out "softly" to center. Pittsburgh wins a nail-biter.
Whew, that was nail biter! Go Bucos! Raise the red flag.. death and destruction at McCovey Cove.
Dodgers were down 1-0 until a three-run HR from A-Gon (T4). 3-1 LA.
Turner just launched a two-run shot in the fifth. 5-1 LA
kazmir falling apart here in the fifth. Walks the bases loaded, two outs, 2-1 count on Altherr...
Kazmir escapes the fifth! 5-1 LA through 5
Kazmir comes out shaky in the sixth. Leadoff HR to make it 5-2 LA, then two straight singles. PULL HIM, DAVE
A-Gon with another HR! With Corey Seager (who had doubled) on base!
7-1 LA
whoops, make that 7-2
blanton gives up a two-out double
But gets out of it. 7-2 LA through 7 full
Seager grounds to third with two out and two RISP. 7-2 through 7.5
Don't mind that
I am really worried that the Giants hit rock bottom today and that they'll start playing better starting with the Mets, and be back to their pain-in-the-ass selves when we play them next week
And I hope we can split vs SF and the Cubs
I still think this is the Cubs year, and probably not ours. But a NL West title would be good.
Ok let's get fired up for today's games
GAME 3

Strips escapes. 3-1 LA through 2
Grandal hits one off his scoreboard picture! 4-1 Dodgers
just checked back in, and it's 4-2 after the Howard shot
wow, bad miscommunication with grandal and A-gon on that dropped fly ball (that rolled foul).
two-out double by featherston makes it 4-3 LA
4-3 LA, mid-5
two-out double by Franco in the bottom of the fifth
Stripling walks Howard, batting .199, to put Phils on 1st and 2nd with Rupp coming up
walks the bases loaded. gulp
strips Ks Paredes! 4-3 LA through 5
Dodgers waste a chance in T6. Still 4-3
Dodgers escape B6. 4-3 LA
Phillies take a 5-4 lead on a 2-run HR by Franco. Great.
blew it

we're going 1-2 vs Cincy while the Giants take 3 of 4 from Delino's boys
Dust off the loss, eat a bowl of skyline chili, and annihilate the Reds!
