Games 13-15 Thread: April 22-24 @ Padres

Dirty play, from a team whose colors are yellow and brown.

Fri 4/22 6.40p: Julio Urias vs. Nick Martinez
Sat 4/23 6.40p: Tyler Anderson vs. Yu Darvish
Sun 4.24 1.10p: Clayton Kershaw vs. Sean Manaea

The Dodgers venture to Petco Park with the majors' best record (9-3), one game ahead of the Padres (9-5); the Dodgers also have the highest run differential (+32) in the league. But these are the Padres, who flamed out at the end of 2021 and then fired manager Jayce Tingler, and then started the season with star Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 60-day IL after breaking his wrist in the Dominican Republic this off-season (Tatis is now tending to this injury by playing soccer with teammates, including slipping and falling on his good wrist).

With these headwinds, the Padres have decided to come out in 2022 and play like...thugs. Just ask Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, who was chop-blocked into a concussion at the plate by Padre Luke Voit, clearly playing dirty. Yep, these are the Padres: beautiful ballpark, but unsightly play inside.

On Friday, I have no doubt that the Pads will try to rough up Urias (coming off a great start last week (5.0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 5 Ks and 1 BB)). Saturday, Tyler Anderson gets the nod with Andrew Heaney hitting the Dodgers' 10-day IL, thanks to a great outing by Tony Gonsolin Wednesday that did not require an Anderson bailout. And then we wrap up with Kershaw on Sunday.

Also, very eager to see if Cody Bellinger's newfound contact hitting is a trend, or just a blip. And hoping that Mookie Betts and Max Muncy can break out of their slumps in this series.

Otherwise, let's just stay healthy this series.

LET'S GO, DODGERS!

Bumped into Gavin Lux yesterday. He said his back was “pretty good” and looked positive. Get well soon, Gavin!

Treinen to IL, shoulder. Bummer

spank said...

Damn

Let's hope this shortened spring training doesn't result in a string of injuries. Seeing quite a few at the start of the season here. Let's get healthy boys and girls!

Like I said Wednesday...It's starting already. After last season I'm a little paranoid. :(

We need to whip some Padre ass before Tatis Jr gets back.

Dammit. 1-0 SD

karen said...

Julio not looking too good.

spank said...

Beat LA chants start at Petco. That's cute.

karen said...

Julio gets out of a messy second inning giving up just the 1 run.

karen said...

@Spanky....I hate the Beat LA chants!!

spank said...

Nice slider by Urias there

spank said...

@ Karen I like the chants. It means the team is hated. Legit

karen said...

@Spank...The Dodgers are definetly hated in San Diego. I think I told you about when my mom, aunt, cousin and I went down there to watch the Dodgers win and clinch the West and of course we had our Dodger gear on and stood and sang 'We Are the Champions' and the Padre fans threw food at us. It was great!!

spank said...

@ karen. Haha. nah I would have remembered that story. That's bad ass.

karen said...

I love Jessica's idea about putting a mic on Freddie.

karen said...

Julio looked better there. Still 1-0 Friars after 3.

spank said...

Nice inning by Urias

karen said...

Mookie crushes one to tie up the game 1-1 T5.

Steve Sax said...

Mookie and Muncy with hits today. I like it.

Steve Sax said...

Sorry I’m late, boys and girls! Friend had an In N Out truck this evening. No way I was gonna let THAT go to waste

karen said...

Stupid, fucking Friar fan just threw something at Belli.

Steve Sax said...

Voit subbed for a pinch runner. At least that will stop the chop blocks on Dodgers fielders

karen said...

@Sax...In N Out is always excusable :)

karen said...

Top of the order coming up....

Steve Sax said...

Way to go Blue! PR Azocar threatens, but Hosmer pops to Lux for the third out.

Steve Sax said...

2-1 LA through 6

Steve Sax said...

Betts singles.

Padres go to bullpen.

Freeman singles on the first pitch.

None out, Betts on second and Freddie on first.

karen said...

Bases juiced, no outs.

Steve Sax said...

Trea with an infield single! Rancho ardiendo!

spank said...

Bases juiced. No out. Finish them!

karen said...

Max brings in 2...4-1 LA

spank said...

Hells yeah!

karen said...

Max looked out there.

Steve Sax said...

Not exactly sure why Muncy is trying to advance to second on a sac fly. He’s out.

But Trea scores so it’s 5-1 LA. But now the bases are empty for Slappy

Steve Sax said...

5-1 LA, mid-7

spank said...

Looked like Muncy got tagged on his calf before stepping on second base.

Steve Sax said...

Padres go 1-2-3 in the seventh. Nice inning by Evan Phillips

spank said...

Mookie coming up. 6-1 Dodgers

spank said...

Top o the 9th

Steve Sax said...

🐄🔑🦇🦇🦇🦇🦇

karen said...

Isn't it great seeing Mookie's infectious smile in the dugout??!!

Steve Sax said...

Mookie’s second HR of the game makes it 6-1 LA, top 9

20th career multi-HR game for Betts. He’s tied for the major league record for three-HR games.

karen said...

Thank you karen for posting the lineup!

I'm only on my phone tonight so please hold down the fort!

Thank you and LET'S GO DODGERS!

Steve Sax said...

More dirty play, this time from Padres fans: fan tries to hit Cody Bellinger on the field with a beer can (from Friday night's game).

karen said...

Already some bad calls by home ump

karen said...

@Sax...I saw that and Joe mentioned that it was a can thrown at Cody. Yep, the team and fans are assholes.

karen said...

Both Orel during pregame and Joe during game mention that Darvish's problems coincide with the crackdown on pitchers and sticky stuff.

Mmmm....

karen said...

Tyler Anderson in to pitch for the injured Heaney.

karen said...

Tyler Anderson sits Friars down in 6 pitches in first.

karen said...

Bases juiced for Mookie in T2

karen said...

Mookie Ks. Darvish at 51 pitches through 2.

spank said...

Dammit. Mookie strikes put with the bases juiced to end the inning

spank said...

1-0 SD. Sac fly

karen said...

Crowd chanting 'Let's go Dodgers'. Last night 60% of crowd at Petco were Dodger fans with more of the same tonight.

Friars score on Myers sac fly. 1-0 SD B2.

karen said...

Afaro's hair looks like a really bad wig.

spank said...

I'm not concerned about Anderson yet but I'm getting a little uneasy feeling

spank said...

Anderson gives up a homerun to Cronenworth.2-0 Padres after 3

karen said...

Anderson started out okay but now?? Not so much. Blue still down 2-0 B5.

karen said...

Doc coming out with a hook for Anderson. Bickford coming in to face Machado.

spank said...

Dodgers in some shit with Machado coming up

karen said...

Bickford Ks Machado. 2-0 SD after 5.

spank said...

Nickelback strikes out Machado!

karen said...

I guess I'm going to have to adjust my opinion of Yu Darvish after hearing that story and what a nice guy he is. Although he, too, was a victim of the Houston Cheaters I still had a bad attitude about his short time with the Dodgers. Crap, I hate it when I don't like someone and then find out how wrong I am about them and that I am just probably a major bitch.

spank said...

I missed the Darvish story. I'm listening to Santana on the stereo.

karen said...

In what world does this team have only 1 hit after 6 innings??

spank said...

Jessica Mendoza has those "beat your cheating husband with a rolling pin" arms.

karen said...

@Spank...Basically a kid named Landon drove from Tennessee with his parents to Atlanta to see Darvish who is the kid's favorite player. The game is rained out but Darvish stays around and signs autographs for the people who hung around including Landon. His mom then Instagrams Darvish to tell him thank you on Landon's behalf. Darvish contacts them and flies them from Tennessee to San Diego where he tells them the game won't get rained out. He pays for the hotel as well and has Landon in the dugout before the game and also got him some signed souvenirs to take home. Crap. He's a nice guy huh.

spank said...

@Karen- Dang. Dervish is the man. I still hate him. He's the enemy. Haha

karen said...

@Spank...I shut everything down and then reopened it and everything seems okay now. Thanks!!

Ct3 gets on in eighth and Lux repping the tying run is up. T8.

karen said...

Lux singles to center. Boys on first and second with no outs. 2-0 SD

karen said...

Garcia Ks Mookie. Dodgers at the corners with 1 out. Melvin bringing in the Friars closer to pitch to Freddie.

spank said...

@ Karen - cool. Rebooting is always a good a idea when computers get squonky

karen said...

Freddie Ks. 2 out

karen said...

TT ties up the game with a 2 out double in the eighth. 2-2 with 2 outs.

spank said...

Trea day!

karen said...

Max Ks to end the T8. Score tied at 2.

spank said...

Good opportunity here for runs

spank said...

Well that sucked

karen said...

On to extra innings

karen said...

Well that was sucky

spank said...

Horrible

spank said...

Unacceptable

Steve Sax said...

Dammit. 0-for-5 with 4 Ks?! Come on, Mookie!

QuadSevens said...

Relief pitchers must hate the extra innings rule. Bruihl starts a new inning, faces two batters, gets them both out and gets the L. Insane.

Steve Sax said...

True, but we had the same opportunity and CT3 got nailed at third on a fly out DP. This one is on us

Steve Sax said...

Sorry- misread it Quad. You’re right, relievers must hate this.

I’m still salty about the loss

QuadSevens said...

Definitely a tough way to lose. Being salty is expected. Let’s hope the team is too.

Steve Sax said...

Ok so let's move on. Here we go:

GAME 3 (4/24)

Betts RF
Freeman 1B
T Turner SS
J Turner DH
Muncy 3B
Taylor LF
Bellinger CF
Alberto 2B
Barnes C

P Kershaw

Steve Sax said...

Kershaw is six Ks short of the Dodger franchise record (Sutton).

karen said...

HAPPY KERSHAW DAY SoSG NATION!!!

Today's the day Clayton. Let's run Don Sutton down and take your rightful place in franchise history!!

karen said...

Hard to see Mookie talk about last nights game.

karen said...

David Price now sent to 10 day IL.

karen said...

Orel wants Clayton's record breaking K to be a slider down and the batter to be Manny Machado.

Steve Sax said...

First pitch base hit for Mookie! Let's do this.

karen said...

JT brings Mookie home with a sac fly. 1-0 Blue.

spank said...

Woop

Steve Sax said...

Trea and Justin sacrifice Mookie Betts around from second to third, and third to home.

1-0 LA, but two out. Freeman on first.

Steve Sax said...

We're swinging on first pitches though

Steve Sax said...

1-0 LA after 0.5. Manaea saw five batters but only threw 12 pitches.

Steve Sax said...

Geez. Kershaw hits a guy on the foot and then next batter gets a ball off Freeman's glove. First and third with none out for the Padres.

karen said...

GIDP!! We needed that.

spank said...

Lucky. Thought it was going to be curtains for Kershaw.

Steve Sax said...

Profar grounds into a double play!

1-0 LA through 1.

karen said...

Profer, in the spirit of his thug teammates and fans, tries to hustle a hit by pitch.

spank said...

Classic Belli.

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers go 1-2-3 in the second, with two Ks. Not good.

1-0 LA through 1.5

Steve Sax said...

Sorry...earlier I said Kershaw needed six Ks. Apparently he needs six to tie and seven to hold the record alone.

Kershaw just got two Ks in the second, so now he needs five more to be the franchise leader (alone).

karen said...

Freddie blasts a 2 run homer. 3-0 Good Guys

spank said...

Gone!!

Steve Sax said...

Freeman HR!

With Betts on base (walk), it's 3-0 LA

karen said...

Belli goes yard and off a lefty....4-0 Blue

spank said...

Belli?

Belli!!

Steve Sax said...

Belli bomb whaaaaaaaaaat

Steve Sax said...

Alberto with a two-out single

spank said...

For me,goddamnit

spank said...

Aww Mook. I asked you to hit one out for me brah. Wtf?

Steve Sax said...

Kershaw escapes the jam with his third K of the game.

4-1 LA through 3

Steve Sax said...

Sorry, through 4

karen said...

TT scores on sac fly. 5-1 LA

karen said...

Second Belli Bomb!!!! 6-1 LA

spank said...

Holy shit! Belli!!

karen said...

Oops...8-1 Blue

Steve Sax said...

Bellinger opens up the can of whup-ass! Three run HR makes it 8-1 LA

spank said...

Bases juiced. Pile it on

Steve Sax said...

Kid K is done. He doesn’t get the franchise K record today but still pitched well.

Steve Sax said...

10-1 LA through 6

karen said...

The good news is that Kersh will get the chance to break the record at home.

karen said...

Is this Morunta's Dodger debut? I don't remember seeing him.

karen said...

DODGERS WIN 10-2

Steve Sax said...

That was big.

I'll try and do a PGT later this afternoon. (I took a post-game nap.)

Steve Sax said...

PGT up!
