Opening Day 2020 Game Thread: Giants @ Dodgers, 7p

Stubhub screenshot from Monday. Great seats still available.

Clayton Kershaw Dustin May vs. Johnny Cueto.

Holy shit, it's actually BASEBALL AGAIN!!! And though all respect goes to Clayton Kershaw for making his ninth Opening Day start, Kerhsaw scratched with back stiffness and hits the IL; Dustin May recalled and will make the start (3.30p) the biggest news will be seeing our own Mookie Betts play his first regular-season game in a Dodger uniform...his first of many games lasting through 2032. What a rush, what a day, what an incredibly hopeful day for Dodger fans.

It's a little bit of a bummer that Gavin Lux won't be on the Opening Day roster (to be fair, he reported late and he did look shaky, notwithstanding any service time conspiracy theories floating around). But it's all Mookie Mookie Mookie here. How I would love to see him hit a leadoff HR today. I would probably burst into flames right then and there.

We're posting this Game Thread incredibly early because there's no better time to say: IT'S TIME FOR DODGER BASEBALL!!!

Update from SoSG Nomo, 9:50a:
Here's the Dodgers' Opening Day 30(!)-man roster:

Edited to add the Opening Day roster.

30 players!

Dusty Baker said...

On the sofa, Vinny!!!

Damn, that felt good.

Dusty Baker said...

There are four pitchers on this "roster" I've never heard of.

Orel said...

MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOKIE

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE I think that's one for every year

Steve Sax said...

Who will be the first non-Son to comment?

Steve Sax said...

(hopefully not a spambot)

Dusty Baker said...

Quad of course

Steve Sax said...

What about that crazy woman who thought I was the real Steve Sax

QuadSevens said...

Got my Bellinger t-shirt jersey on and I’m ready to go!

Dusty Baker said...

See I had your back there, 7777!

QuadSevens said...

Thanks Dusty! I've been ready for today all week. Been doing all my video calls in a Dodgers hat.

Orel said...

Kershaw to IL with back stiffness. May called up to take his place

QuadSevens said...

Not the way I envisioned May getting an opening day start. Damn.

Steve Sax said...

GT updated. Damn

Orel said...

Damn

Steve Sax said...

You know the old saying, "Kershaw farts bring May starts"

Steve Sax said...

Muncy 1B
Betts RF
Bellinger CF
Turner 3B
Seager SS
Hernandez 2B
Pederson LF
Pollock DH (ugh I don't like writing that)
Barnes C
May P

Dusty Baker said...

@Quad I've been doing all my video calls in a Dodgers hat since March

Steve Sax said...

Mookie already out of the leadoff spot. Man, that guy had better get this shit together. I'm sure he's on a short leash

Steve Sax said...

20 Comments! It's an explosion

Steve Sax said...

If only we could link Blogger to WhatsApp

Dusty Baker said...

Opening of Nats v Yankmes now.

Orel said...

I'm so glad I'm not a Yankees fan

Dusty Baker said...

^Evergreen

Dusty Baker said...

Stanton hits a monster HR to make it 2-0 over Nats in the 1st.

Orel said...

Bellinger/Betts > Judge/Stanton...?

Orel said...

Haha, Cole taken deep!

QuadSevens said...

@Dusty 3:52pm
Nice. I haven't had any video calls except for this week.

Orel said...

17 minutes until we can MPQ again!

Steve Sax said...

The Basilica awaits!

Franklin Stubbs said...

Waxing eloquent about the universal DH in the Nats/Yanks booth. The season is 5 innings old and I want to slap A Rod with a halibut.

Unknown said...

I finally move back to LA and get season tickets just in time to be blacked out by the unholy alliance of SNLA and COVID. Can't believe I have to be thankful for ESPN tonight.

Jason said...

^ that was me. Work computers are a pain.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Whew, I was worried we were going to have to act civilized for the normies.

Hideo Nomo said...

Admittedly, I did no reading, but there are no byes in the expanded playoffs, right? Everybody plays the 3-game wild card round with the higher seeds hosting all three? That’s fucking wacky.

Franklin Stubbs said...

I’m pretty annoyed with the playoff thing. If they want to do NBA style everybody-in, who cares about winning the division?

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Beer check: Stone Buenaveza. Happy Opening Day in July!

Jason said...

Let's doooooo this

Jason said...

Leave it to ESPN to make us all miss 1st pitch

Steve Sax said...

Applause for Mookie making that catch!

Steve Sax said...

Pablo hits yaz. And espn can only say yaz did that on purpose. Screw them

Steve Sax said...

Five up, three down

Jason said...

Is that a Mike Brito cutout in the first row behind home?

Steve Sax said...

(Six if you count both of Pablo)

Steve Sax said...

Karl Ravech is very excited for Johnny Cueto. And Tim Kurkjian agrees

Steve Sax said...

Mookie Ks in his first Dodger AB.

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers go in order. 0-0 through 1

Jason said...

Cueto balked twice on one pitch. Impressive!

Steve Sax said...

Wow, Tim: the Giants are using interchangable pieces in their lineup?! What a frickin' revelation! Wonder who else does that?

Steve Sax said...

Kike with a sweet play! 0-0 through 1.5

Steve Sax said...

that is a GREAT dogs and MLB gear commercial

Franklin Stubbs said...

G&T and listing to the booth describe how abysmal the Giants are going to be, and it’s the first time I can believe that the order of the world will be eventually be restored.

Steve Sax said...

love the welcome back kotter themed ad! WELCOME BACK

Steve Sax said...

Turner pulling an Utley, leadoff HBP

Steve Sax said...

Seager with a first pitch GIDP. Shit, Corey.

Steve Sax said...

Kike breaks up the no-hitter!

Steve Sax said...

Pederson grounds out on the shift. We didn't take many pitches from Cueto that inning. 0-0 through 2

Jason said...

It's like the ESPN "booth" has never announced a game before. This is painful. And I'm use to Charlie Steiner!

Hideo Nomo said...

Went to pick up food and the radio broadcast sounds weirdly normal with the fake crowd noise.

Steve Sax said...

Leadoff bunt single for the Giants, T3

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Yikes... bases full giants and fat panda hungry at the bat

Jason said...

More like Designated Sitter! Amirite?

Neeebs said...

Where is this high powered offense?

Steve Sax said...

we are not doing well so far.

Franklin Stubbs said...

Lead-off double. Do not squander.

Steve Sax said...

Seager double, but I'm sure we'll strand him.

Steve Sax said...

Hey stubbs, that ain't leadoff

unless my feed is really slow

Franklin Stubbs said...

Empatado

Franklin Stubbs said...

@Sax

You are correct and I have been drinking. Not an excuse, just laying out the situation.

Steve Sax said...

Joc moves Kiké to third with a single to right!

Jason said...

@Stubbs... same

Steve Sax said...

Pollock takes a walk, so the bases are JUICED

RANCHO ARDIENDO

Jason said...

I just realized what the booth over-talking and silence reminds me of... Assassin's Circle!

Orel said...

RANCHO ARDIENDO

Steve Sax said...

@Stubbs, I'm drinking as well. Just finished that Golden Road Blonde Ale that I'd been saving.

Which is good, because Austin Barnes still is HORRIBLE from the plate

Orel said...

HOLY SHIT IT'S JASON

Neeebs said...

Austin is deemed a Kershaw specialist. Will should have started.

Orel said...

AND DBT IT'S A REUNION BABY

Jason said...

We're gettin' the band back together

Orel said...

NEEEBS

Orel said...

Not even Mookie Betts can prevent the Dodgers from being themselves

Neeebs said...

OREL....bang

Orel said...

Jason: Welcome back!

DBT: Love the Skechers hate!

Neeebs: Warm up your arm!

Orel said...

When did the Giants re-sign Pence? They sure love their old friends

Steve Sax said...

May leaves after 60 pitches. Given he learned about the opening day start about 5 hours ago, totally respectable. Here's Caleb Ferguson.

Steve Sax said...

Karl Ravech just did the worst possible job at explaining that three-batter-minimum rule.

I agree, it's ridiculous.

Steve Sax said...

Kung Fat Panda is hacking up there. If he gets on contact with one, that ball is gone

Orel said...

Dodgers get a bad-baserunning gift to end the inning

Franklin Stubbs said...

Threaded the needle out if that one

Jason said...

Very Gnats with that rundown

Steve Sax said...

BOOM! Bad baserunning by Heineman! Love it

Neeebs said...

I'll take it.

Steve Sax said...

I love how Tyler Heineman just stood there as Corey charged.

Steve Sax said...

I'm looking at a AAA commercial.

I'm not a AAA member. And I'm not driving a car much these days.

Seems like a waste of money

Steve Sax said...

Of course the YankMes invite Trump to throw out the first pitch.

Steve Sax said...

Cool Dick's Sporting Goods ad, to sweeeeeeeeeeet emoooooooootion

Orel said...

Why are we talking to an Oakland Athletic?

Orel said...

Mookie's first hit or an error?

Steve Sax said...

Dieter playing the Weeknd

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE

Steve Sax said...

my feed is clearly delayed. that's the price i pay for finally getting cable

Neeebs said...

E6

Steve Sax said...

Seager is hacking away on the sliders again

QuadSevens said...

I’m back. What did I miss?

Orel said...

Goddammit Corey

Steve Sax said...

And, Seager Ks with a RISP.

Feels like last year again.

Orel said...

We tied it up Quad but also wasted a lot of opportunities. Business as usual

Jason said...

Business as usual would imply Baez would be in... DAMMIT!

QuadSevens said...

And some terrible announcing. These ESPN broadcasts are always hard to listen to.

Orel said...

To be fair, they just discovered the NL West exists

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Let’s get some damn runs before the cutouts start leaving early to beat traffic!

QuadSevens said...

Love the loud F bomb echoing in the stadium by Joc.

Jason said...

Peterson gets bleeped

Steve Sax said...

Dieter playing Cum on feel the noize. Nice

Orel said...

"You like that? You like that???"

Jason said...

Dodgers are the kings of 2 out hits this season

Steve Sax said...

Pollock with a hit! Unbelievable.

Oh, here's Barnes.

Steve Sax said...

First pitch ground out directly to short. Nice job, Austin.

1-1 through 6

Jason said...

Nice breaking ball by Peaty!

Steve Sax said...

Wait, how exactly does Kershaw change cars in that Hankook commercial?

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE! single to left. first hit, he wants the ball

Jason said...

"As a right handed hitter, you have to drive that ball to right center field!"

(Mookie immediately drives the ball to left)

Franklin Stubbs said...

@Sax

Standards and Practices made them cut the carjacking sequence.

QuadSevens said...

Back to back hits for the MVP duo.

Steve Sax said...

"The Killer Bs"

Orel said...

Mookie first Dodger hit & RBI!

Steve Sax said...

I'm waiting for some idiot to look at a crowd shot and say "the LA fans left early"

Jason said...

MOOKIE!

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE!

That's not an RBI though, Orel

Dusty Baker said...

Hang that fucking phone up asshole in Gnats dugout

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE

Orel said...

That run cost $365M

Orel said...

Stellar baserunning tonight

Steve Sax said...

MOOKIE MOOKIE MOOKIE

Steve Sax said...

Bellinger did well to get Turner all the way to third, though

Dusty Baker said...

Hi DBT! Been too long!

Orel said...

Kiké!

Jason said...

First thought: what the hell Belli?

Then I realized the Giants could have easily had a double play and been out of the inning if Cody doesn't get that throw home.

MORE RUNS!

Steve Sax said...

Maybe if Seager could hit the ball out of the goddamn infield, Cody wouldn't have had to do that

Steve Sax said...

KIKE!!!

Steve Sax said...

Dodgers up 4-1

QuadSevens said...

Mustache power!

Steve Sax said...

In the Hankook commercial, Kershaw also steals a car. that's grand theft auto

Steve Sax said...

@Quad: PORNstache power

Jason said...

Dee Gordon on the mount

Jason said...

^ mound.

STOOPID WORK LAPTOP KEYBOARD!

Dusty Baker said...

@DBT

Sam Adams Summer->Dos XX lager->2X G/T->CA red blend wine

Jason said...

Gabe Kapler: "This team sucks. Except Longoria, but that's relative"

Steve Sax said...

the giants are not social distancing there in their dugout

Steve Sax said...

great color commentary there: the dodgers appear happier in the dugout when they are winning by three runs.

NO SHIT

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

7th inning and the cutouts are still there.

QuadSevens said...

@Sax You’re so right on Kiké’s mustache!

Jason said...

@DB - sounds like you're in midseason form already

Jason said...

AHAHAHAHAHA

Steve Sax said...

all right barnes, prove me wrong

Steve Sax said...

holy shit, barnes BARELY proves me wrong

Steve Sax said...

why didn't he go to first base?! sloppy play by the giants

Steve Sax said...

Jason must be at the Stadium, his feed is much better

Orel said...

RANCHO MOOKIENDO

Steve Sax said...

Now Karl Ravech is defending the misplay because he's a natural center fielder playing shortstop.

DIDN'T YOU JUST TELL US THE GIANTS HAVE INTERCHANGABLE PARTS?! ESPN broadcasters are horrible

Jason said...

I'll take it!

Steve Sax said...

why are the giants leaving this pitcher in? they're breaking him

Franklin Stubbs said...

Man these guys are uncomfortably into Brandon Crawford

Steve Sax said...

6-1 LA, RANCHO ARDIENDO, Mookie mookie mookie at the plate

Steve Sax said...

@Stubbs: they haven't yet mentioned Crawford's flowing locks of hair

Orel said...

Mookie Ks with the bases juiced, he's a bust

Dusty Baker's Toothpick said...

Oh Mookie...

Jason said...

They haven't mentioned shadows yet either. That would be ESPN bingo

Steve Sax said...

How long are we stuck with this mookie guy

Steve Sax said...

i want to call the dodgers' abusive fan hotline and throw out one of those cardboard cutouts

QuadSevens said...

They need to have stickers of hot dogs and beers on some of those cut outs.

Steve Sax said...

wow, very favorable call there for Kolarek to get that K

Jason said...

Barnes earning his keep with the framing?

Orel said...

Belli & Mookie frolicking in the outfield warms my cold, dead heart

Orel said...

I mean, we don't need Barnes to hit

Steve Sax said...

MLB / BLM

Steve Sax said...

@Orel, we gotta be able to find a guy who can frame and still hit .200

QuadSevens said...

Birthday balloon on the field? That’s gotta be a first.

Steve Sax said...

balloon on the field, and dieter is playing nena. nice

Jason said...

99 luftbaloons by Dieter. Nice!

Steve Sax said...

wow, turner fouled that back and the cutouts didn't even flinch

Steve Sax said...

will they change the all-star game logo in the next two years?

Jason said...

The All Start game IS being played in Los Angeles! Have you SEEN this roster?

Steve Sax said...

Turner with a "double"!

Steve Sax said...

Oh wow, the replay showed that the Giants' McCarthy had a glove on that one but missed it. ouch

Jason said...

(Barnes not withstanding)

Steve Sax said...

Seager smoked it. but still an out

Steve Sax said...

"You can't help but remember Yasmani Grandal with the Dodgers"--Karl Ravech

Nah, I've forgotten that guy.

Orel said...

Kiké!

Steve Sax said...

Listening to these ESPN broadcasters is like listening to a bad international conference call. So much delay

Dusty Baker said...

KIKE INTO MANNYWOOD!

QuadSevens said...

PORNSTACHE!!

Steve Sax said...

KIKE HR!!!

Steve Sax said...

3B coach Ebel with a fake low five. Love it

Steve Sax said...

"the mustache is the MVP"

Steve Sax said...

holy shit we are over 200 comments

Steve Sax said...

Why oh why did Clayton sell out to Skechers

Jason said...

DB missed his customary "42" by a LOT tonight

Dusty Baker said...

Clay is in several commercials and previously he hadn't been in many at all. I don't care either way, just interesting.
