Dominguez Ills; Marmol Allayed?

As reported by the Dodgers yesterday (and witnessed by fans watching the train wreck three-run sixth inning last night, the Dodgers have placed Jose Dominguez on the 15-day DL to bring up disgraced Cub closer Carlos Marmol from his post in the Dodgers' minor-league circuit:

TORONTO -- The Dodgers called up veteran right-handed reliever Carlos Marmol from Double-A Chattanooga on Tuesday and placed Jose Dominguez on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quad muscle after initially announcing they would option the rookie reliever to Triple-A Albuquerque.

Marmol was acquired on July 2 from the Cubs, along with financial considerations that included $209,700 in international signing space. In return, the Cubs received reliever Matt Guerrier, who, like Marmol, had been designated for assignment.

Marmol waived his no-trade clause to accept the deal.

"I like the team, it wins every day," Marmol said. "With all the players here, it's a good team. How can I say no? Better than Chicago."

He was tested immediately on Tuesday, relieving starter Chris Capuano in the fifth and allowing three runs on four hits, including a Jose Reyes homer, in 1 2/3 innings in the Dodgers' 10-9 come-from-behind win over the Blue Jays.

"You can tell he gets going fast and he gets going everywhere," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said. "He gave up a home run but got three outs. A little good, a little bad."

Actually, that was more of the bad part than the good part, Donnie. But after seeing Dominguez come up a little gimpy in Monday's game, it seems like as good a time as any to see if Marmol has any stuff worth keeping. (So far, it doesn't look like much.)

DODGERS 14, BLUE JAYS 5

The Dodgers had a field day at the Rogers Centre tonight, eh. "Eh Jeh" Ellis had a two-run HR to open up the game (AJEllis went 4-for-6 with 5 RBI). Carl Crawford went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI, looking like he might be coming out of his slump. Hanley Ramirez was 2-for-5 with 2 runs scored and a double. And the surprise offensive output came from Skip Schumaker, who was 2-for-5 with 3 RBI off a three-run HR in the seventh inning, opening up a 14-4 lead. In fact, the only starter to not get a hit today was Juan Uribe, 0-for-4 with 4 LOB (Yasiel Puig was 1-for-5 with 6 LOB and some horrifyingly embarrassing strikeouts, but to be fair, like Uribe, he had some great defensive plays).

Hyun-Jin Ryu went 5.1 IP and gave up 9 H, but only 4 ER (2 BB, 3 Ks). It wasn't stellar Ryu, but it was more than enough tonight. Jose Dominguez, JP Howell, and Chris Withrow had 3.2 innings of work among them, yielding only one more run to the Blue Jays.

After struggling through a slew of low-scoring games in Colorado and the first two games of the Nationals series, it's nice to see the Dodgers have big offensive outputs two nights in a row (23 runs total in the two games). For a split second here, for the second day in a row, the Dodgers are tied for first. Let's see how the evening ends.

Stephen Fife: Hot. After throwing 7 shutout innings, he gets the win to move to 3-2 and stake a claim to be the legit #4 or #5 starter we need.

Puig: En fuego. Goes 4-5, a HR short of hitting for the cycle. Finishes June (minus the first two days of the month) .436/.467/.713. Had 44 hits in his first calendar month, second in MLB history behind some dude named Joe DiMaggio (48). Beats Steve Sax's rookie record for hits in debut month.

Jose Dominguez: Bringing the heat. In his MLB debut, threw 1-2-3 inning in relief. Dominguez threw 10 fastballs in his first MLB inning: 2 at 101 MPH, 1 at 100 MPH, 6 at 99 MPH, 1 at 97 MPH (thanks to Bill Shaikin for this info).

Dodger fans: Smokin'. With 42,405 today we pass the 2 million mark in attendance, first in MLB.
