Series Thread (Games 66-68): June 14-16 vs. Phillies

Mon 6.14: Gonsolin vs. Howard
Tues 6.15: Urias vs. Eflin
Wed 6.16: Kershaw vs. Wheeler
All games 7p

The Dodgers sit one game back of the Giants for first place in the NL West, but still have the second-best record in the league as well as the biggest run differential in the NL. But the Phillies are a > .500 team and it doesn't take an arthouse film afficionado to understand that the series will only go our way if Gonsolin can ensure Howard's End in Game 1. From then on, the series should be a breeze: an Eflin' layup for Julio Urias, followed by Clayton Kershaw dueling a loose Wheeler. Let's go, Catman.

Still no Belli

Thank you for the lineup, karen!

Hope you're doing well. It's hot today. I need to be in the pool.

karen said...

Hey Sax! At long last we get a full house at the Ravine tomorrow night. I hope our brethren bring their outside voices! And yes, it is HOT. Mondays are deadline days for me and it was miserable. The really bad news is its supposed to be seven degrees hotter tomorrow. YIKES!

Nomar just said that he won't be surprised if Belli goes on the IL. ):

Steve Sax said...

Oh man. On the one hand, it's amazing we have this W-L record when Belli, Muncy, Seager are all injured (though coming back, unlike May).

But on the other hand, I'm not sure if we'll be able to have it together by year's end.

karen said...

I have thought that too. It feels like Belli isn't going to comeback all the way this season and who knows when Muncy will be back. They did say yesterday that Seager was way ahead of schedule with his rehab so I guess I'll hang on to that little nugget and pray on the rest.

Two batters in, and Gonsolin is already shitting the bed. Second and third for the Phillies, none out.

Steve Sax said...

Realmuto Ks for the first out.

karen said...

WOW...Bryce Harper took a 97 mph fastball to the face last season. How do you climb back into the batter's box after something like that??

Steve Sax said...

one run in, now bases loaded for the Phils with one out.

Tony Gonsolin does not look the same this year.

Steve Sax said...

Gonsolin escapes with a third out K.

1-0 PHI through 0.5

Steve Sax said...

Gonsolin gives up his second double in the second, but escapes unscathed. Still 1-0 PHI through 1.5

Steve Sax said...

@karen 7:19p: yeah, but Gonsolin threw him a 81mph curve, hence the Harper RBI in the first :(

Steve Sax said...

Howard has a no-hitter through 2.

1-0 PHI

karen said...

@Sax...Doesn't it seem like there have been a lot of games this season where the Dodgers haven't got a hit till 4th and 5th innings?

karen said...

I know I am totally repeating myself here but the balls and strikes calls have been atrocious this season.

Steve Sax said...

Howard has a no-hitter through 3

1-0 PHI

Steve Sax said...

Betts leadoff walk in the fourth. There goes the perfect game

karen said...

This is the farthest Howard has gone in a game. Yep, he's primed to no-hit us.

karen said...

Woo-Hoo! There goes the perfecto, the no-hitter and the shut out. I just love it when that happens.

karen said...

CT3 goes yard...3-1 LA.

WIN

Steve Sax said...

Kenley comes in for the ninth and the save.

And, we get a Jumbo Jack!

Steve Sax said...

Giants won, so they're still a game up. Padres lost.

QuadSevens said...

That fastball to the face was scary as hell! Good win for the Dodgers tonight.

GAME 2

Taylor 2B
Pujols 1B
McKinstry RF

Happy Grand Reopening California!! The most beautiful stadium in MLB is full to the rafters and rocking. So great to see the best fans in baseball able to cheer on our World Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in person!

QuadSevens said...

Nice diving catch by McKinstry in the third!

QuadSevens said...

MOOKIE BREAKS THE TIE! 4-3 in the 8th.

Steve Sax said...

Giants win it with a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth. grrr

Steve Sax said...

Joe Davis and Orel (and gameday) was totally confused by that last AB. What looked like a 3-2 pitch was actually strike 3. Okay!

Steve Sax said...

WIN

Steve Sax said...

the post-game crew is going to lose their voices each night trying to out-talk the crowd gathered behind that centerfield stage.

Steve Sax said...

Whoops I didn’t use “were” up there in my earlier comment. Sorry

GAME 3

Mookie Betts CF
Gavin Lux SS
Chris Taylor 2B
Matt Beaty 1B
AJ Pollock LF
Zach McKinstry 3B
Steven Souza Jr. RF
Austin Barnes C
Clayton Kershaw P

Steve Sax said...

Hi there, sports fans!

Kershaw gives up a first-inning HR to Rhys Hoskins. But the Dodgers waste chances in the first, and now it's 1-0 PHI with two out in the third.

Steve Sax said...

ah crap, it's 2-0 now. Man on second, still two out.

Steve Sax said...

2-0 PHI through three. Dodgers waste men at the corners when Pollock grounds to third.

Steve Sax said...

it's still 2-0 PHI, B8. Burns with out #1.

Hey the Clippers won Game 5 and take a 3-2 lead!

Steve Sax said...

2-0, but B9 so here we go.

Steve Sax said...

white stripes on.

Souza up.

Steve Sax said...

Neris hits Souza on the elbow.

This was right after his 0-1 pitch was waaaay outside.

Steve Sax said...

Souza's on first. Barnes is up. None out.

Steve Sax said...

Barnes is fucking first pitch swinging, and grounds right into a double play.

Barnes that was horrible.

Steve Sax said...

Neris hits Smith with two out. So here's Mookie.

Steve Sax said...

Flies to center.

Game over. BOOOO

Dodgers shut out for the first time in two seasons.

Dodgers now 2.0 GB.
