Games 99-101 Thread: July 24-26 vs. Blue Jays

The last showdown of these two mega-stars didn't go so well for Los Angeles.

Mon 24 7p: Grove vs. Berrios
Tue 25 7p: Urias vs. Bassitt
Wed 26 1p: Gonsolin vs. Kikuchi

The Dodgers completed their nine-game road trip yesterday with a dispiriting 8-4 loss to the Rangers, but that didn't detract from an overall 6-3 roadtrip record that saw the Dodgers expand their divisional lead to four games over the Diamondbacks and Giants.

The Snakes have lost four in a row; the Giants have lost five straight. Meanwhile, the Dodgers won all three series (against the Mets, Orioles, and Rangers), have now won their last five series, and seem to be rolling...all without reliable pitching from either the starters or the bullpen.

Now, we're back at home for the first time since the All-Star break, with pleasant days off in between all three of the series on this homestand. I'm sure Mookie Betts will welcome Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to the Stadium, having lost in their Home Run Derby faceoff in Seattle (Guerrero Jr. went on to win the whole Derby). Our bats had better keep slugging if we have any chance of overcoming this pitching staff...and who knows, maybe help is on the way?

Tough loss in game 1. Had a chance in the 10th to win it, but we couldn't buy a hit.

Speaking of "help is on the way." Just got an alert that the Red Sox are finalizing a deal to send Kike back to the Dodgers. The team is about to get a shot of energy!

I’d heard the Kiké rumor!

That said, he’s batting a dismal .222 this year with a .600 OPS 😬

QuadSevens said...

Yeah. Not great. But him at short, Rojas at 2nd, lets us move Mookie back to the outfield. A little easier position to play.

Steve Sax said...

Agreed!

Wish Miguel Vargas knew how to hit. Oh well

Steve Sax said...

Or Miguel Rojas, for that matter

WE GOT KIKI BACK!!!!

Steve Sax said...

Bassitt is at a lot of pitches through four. That’s good.

Urias’ pitch count is up there as well. That’s bad

Wow. We were down 7-3 in the ninth, and tied it.

Now we're in the 10th, and it looks like Mookie threw out Kiermaier at home for the second out in the top of the 10th. Bo Bichette on first. Call being reviewed.

Toronto doesn't score in the top of the 10th.

7-7 tie, going to the bottom of the tenth: Yonny Hernandez, James Outman (2-for-2 with 2 BBs, R, SB), and Miguel Rojas (2-for-4, R). CT3 starts at second.

Steve Sax said...

Yonny Hernandez chokes the bunt. One out, can't advance CT3.

Steve Sax said...

Outman had better be swinging here. Get a hit, James!

Steve Sax said...

Former Dodger Mitch White is on the mound for Toronto.

Steve Sax said...

OUTMAN WINS IT!!!

Steve Sax said...

Walkoff double for James Outman!!!

8-7 FINAL

QuadSevens said...

Walk off for Outman!! Win!

Wow! What a win!!!

GAME 3 - The Return of Kiké

Betts RF
Freeman 1B
Martinez DH
Taylor LF
Muncy 3B
Hernandez 2B
Outman CF
Rojas SS
Barnes C

Gonsolin P

Steve Sax said...

That’s not Yonny Hernandez!!!

I hope

QuadSevens said...

You are correct! Kiké went with jersey number 8. I couldn't see anyone who had number 14 on the roster. Wonder why he switched.

QuadSevens said...

Nevermind. Just realized why. 14 was retired. Duh!

Steve Sax said...

Two leadoff singles in the first, and we can't do anything with it (Martinez K, Taylor K, Muncy ground out).

Now Toronto has a leadoff single in the top of the second.

Steve Sax said...

Austin Barnes doesn't get the third out! Only because of a deflection, but it's still AMAZING!!!

Steve Sax said...

Mookie works the walk to load the bases for Freddie Freeman!

Steve Sax said...

0-2 count on Freddie

Steve Sax said...

Dammit. Freddie Ks.

1-0 TOR though 2

Steve Sax said...

Gonsolin is so erratic. HBP and single puts two on, and then he just left a meatball to Brandon Belt, who singles for a RBI.

2-0 TOR.

Steve Sax said...

Gonsolin escapes his own jam.

2-0 TOR, mid-3.

Steve Sax said...

Kike with a base hit!

Leadoff single for the Dodgers in the third.

Steve Sax said...

And, Outman Ks on three pitches, and Rojas predictably GIDPs.

2-0 TOR through 4.

Steve Sax said...

Gonsolin coughs up a three-run HR.

5-0, TOR.

Tony Gonsolin, you are ridiculously awful this year.

Steve Sax said...

He had a 0-2 count on Whit Merrifield. What the hell.

Steve Sax said...

Leadoff double from CT3 in the sixth, and I think we're going to strand him

Steve Sax said...

Outman with an RBI base hit? Not clear yet...

Steve Sax said...

Yes!

6-1 TOR, at least we're on the board. Critical RBI single, given Rojas is up now.

Steve Sax said...

And, Rojas Ks.

6-1 TOR through 6.

Steve Sax said...

Geez. We go down 1-2-3 in the seventh.

Steve Sax said...

Outman up, B8, two out, Dodgers at corners.

Steve Sax said...

Nope. Fly out.

8-1 TOR though 8.

Steve Sax said...

AZ lost, though.

Steve Sax said...

Ballgame.

Dodgers lose their first series in the last six series. 8-1 TOR, final.

BOOOOO

Steve Sax said...

PGT up!

(I'm salty)
